(Adventure) The Island of Varras'zul (Manzanita Judging) (Concluded)

ooc: All PCs recieve 150 XP each.

The trek through the jungle continued 'till the sunset. Mona called for a halt when they reached a clearing in the jungle. She looked exhausted, though she did relatively well to cover her weakness.

"I think this would be a good place to rest" she suggested. "With animals like these about, we shouldn't be moving at night. I propose that we just fortify our camp at this location.

By the next day, we should be reaching the marshlands and perhaps, the ruins themselves"

ooc2: if everyone is agreeable to stopping for camp, then I'll need an order of watches.

edit: ooc3: don't forget to cite your light sources if you don't have your trusty darkvision or if you don't want to make a campfire.

"Since me and Scun 'ave got ourselves a bit o' vision in the dark, we'll take the early mornin' watches, alright with you, mate? Wake me when it's my turn, Ah'm pooped." With that, Rasereit plops on the ground completely clothed and immediately falls into a deep sleep, with obscenely loud snores bursting from his gaping mouth.

"Yes, I'll take one of the darkest shifts. I think a fire wouldn't be a bad idea though, it tends to keep animals away."

ooc: survival check to build a fire if others agree, and also to maybe find some plant that would cause a smell when burnt that would repel animals/vermin.

Wondering how Rasereit is able to fall asleep with the sun in the sky (it is still sunset :) ), Rillian shakes his head and turns to Scun:

"Why dont you and I collect some wood for a fire, the others can guard..." Rillian looks down at the sleeping Rasereit another look of amazement on his eys, " and prep the camp. As far as watches go, I would like the last watch, but I will be happy with whatever."

After preparing his bed under a large fern, Ogrin asks the rest of the band, "I'll take the first shift then, if noone objects? And I agree that we should build a fire, if nothing else to get rid of some of these insects!"

OOC: No light for ogrin, except that from the fire and the setting sun...

ooc: still waiting for Xael to post

Mona was appreciative that everyone took to her suggestion easily. After helping set the camp and eating a meal with the others, she retreated into her own one-person tent.

As Scun noted, the fire did keep animals at bay. However, it seemed to draw more flies and insects to the camp. The vermin flitted about the campfire, some of them getting burned and falling to the ground dead.

"I could join Ogrin in the first watch, but anything will do really.", Nezrak says after a moment of pondering.

OOC: Got the computer. Yay.

"So, Nezrak; you don't happen to have a spell handy against these little monsters?" says Ogrin, still annoyed by all the vermin. "Very well... I'll be our 'eye in the sky' tonight!" He spends the most part of his watch in a tree [Climb +8], carving a small figurine out of an old piece of wood with his dagger [Drawn] and keeping watch.

OOC: This looks like the order then:
First watch, Ogrin+Nezrak
Second watch, Rasereit+Scun
Third watch, Mona+Rillian

The night brought cacophony.

Thousands of insects could be heard from the canopy and in the undergrowth of the jungle. Nocturnal birds squacked and sang their evening vespers. Worse still, however, were the sounds whose sources were unidentifiable, even by the most woodwise of the party. A slick rattling could be heard from time to time.

Nezrak and Ogrin's watch was uninterrupted, though not uneventful. Ogrin had found that the tree he chose to climb up was inhabited by a few hairy caterpillars. He scratched his new red rashes in his sleep.

Nezrak, near the fire, was assaulted by an army of flying irritations bent on lemming-like curiousity to the flame. They fell upon the elf when they were not circling the campfire.

***********

The noise finally faded somewhat at midnight, at the start of Scun's and Rasereit's watch. The new watchmen needed no fire, so they were free to stay away from the flame if they wished. And the flitting insects made them wish so.

With their darkvision, they viewed the environs bereft of color. The legacy of the world below had given them a lightless sight. They used this gift to scan the perimiter beyond the light's edge. Rasereit's war ax was lay right beside him for easy drawing... as did Scun's spear.

For all their abilities in the dark though, neither saw the coming of their new foe.

Rasereit slapped his neck with a gloved hand. Flies, thought the dwarf off handedly. When he looked at his palm however, he found that t'was not a flying thing that had crushed.

It was a spider only a little smaller than his hand. That was when They began to fall like rain from above.

Surprise Round
15- Spider Swarms

Hundreds of arachnids rained upon the campsite. A majority of them dropped upon Scun and Rasereit. They crawled under clothing and bit with poisoned fangs.

Rasereit takes 2 damage. He is nauseated (move action only) for one round.
Scun takes 5 damage. He takes 1 point of strength damage from Spider Poison.

Round 1:
19- Scun
15- Spider Swarms
14- Rasereit

Scun howls in pain and surprise as he is covered in spiders. As he swats at them, he realizes that there are too many to brush away. He moves to the other side of the fire and tries to find some extra firewood to use as a torch or something.
