Mirror Image vs Magic Missile

Unfortunately I can't find the the previous thread on this.

I was thinking about this and there are many opinions as to whether magic missile affects a person under the affects of Mirror Image. I'm going to state that because the spell does not state that it gives the spellcaster immunity to magic missile like shield specifically states, that the wearer is not immune to the effects, that the victim of the magic missile takes the damage.

Now as to resolution of damage, there are many takes. I'm incline to let magic missile eirther damage entirely on the recipient. However, I have used for 30 years where magic missile is used to down images, 4 missiles, 4 images gone.

What do you guys think.

I think you have a remarkable talent for starting threads on controversial topics. :)

IMO, the target of a Magic Missile must be a creature. An image is not a creature, so it is not a valid target. I will openly admit that this is not how I think the spell *should* work, although I have no way of fixing it that doesn't make illusions needlessly complex.

Ditto.

Invalid target = fizzle.

The thing is that you are targeting the creature. But can the damage from each missile be negated by destroying an image.

Actually, reading the text:
Enemies attempting to attack you or cast spells at you must select from among indistinguishable targets.

This states that an image is a valid target though you wouldn't know if it is real until after the damage is resolved.

Under magic missile text:
Inanimate objects are not damaged by this spell.

I think that applies to objects, not an illusion which is tied to saving your butt. An illusion is not an object.

We always play that you can either target all the missles at one image, or use the spells option to shoot at multiple targets and have each missle hit a different target (e.g. image).

Then we roll which target is the real target. Anything that hits the real target does damage. Anything that hits an illusion makes it go away.

(So if there are 3 targets (the mage and two illusionary duplicates) and I have two missles, I could target target 2 and 3. Then if we role that the real target is 2, the mage takes one bolt and one duplicate goes away.)

And my group agrees with wildstarsreach.
Mirror Image is a figment, so it doesn't fall under the can't destroy objects clause of Magic Missile.
