Saiyans and Tyranids

Anubis

First Post
Okay, I'm on a quest. I am calling on all Dragonball and Warhammer 40K fanatics. My mission is to create Saiyans and Tyranids that are compatible with a D&D game.

If you translate either direct without adjustments, they can easily annihilate the universe of D&D. A mere Super Saiyan could destroy most gods, and planets would crumble to the might of the Tyranids.

I know that they're supposed to be that powerful, but I'm looking for a way to translate them both to be usable while still being very powerful.

So, what kind of ideas are floating around out there? Does anybody have any ideas on how to make Saiyans and Tyranids?

First off...

I've never seen Tyranids, so I can't help there. For Saiyan's, though, I'd simplify it. Make them Lycanthropes (were-Advanced Dire Ape) with bonuses to strength, dexterity, and con - possibly wisdom as well. Start with the Illithid base (because an Illithid is a great example of an exceptionally powerful race that is also basically humanoid) and fool around with it - Switch from Aberration to to Monstrous Humanoid, replace Psionics with Ki powers, and give them Monk as their favored class. Mention something about "Epic monks are extraordinarily common in Saiyan society" and you're through.

The really unbalanced thing about the saiyans would be that when they get hurt theyget more powerful. Make them start out with penalties to abilities (and as the get temporary ability damge, then the scores resotre higher, and put a max on it), only able to morph if they have their tale (and make them get control shape skill, or improved control shape feat), and if they don't get a feat, when someone yanks their tale they make a fortitude save or be stunned (the feat is for people like napa and vegita who are immune to the tale thing.)

they should also have an ECL pretty high.

Mabye i'm being a bit harsh, but hey.

Actually, Saiyans don't get more powerful as they get hurt. That's close, but not how it actually goes.

How that works is that when a Saiyan gets near death, he gains an exponential amount of power upon recovering. Basically, if a Saiyan got knocked out and taken below 0, then the Saiyan would gain a level upon being healed.

Oh, and it only works with pure-blood Saiyans.

cmon, close enough. DBZ got so old with the "we are people that cannot kill bad guy for some reason and goku is hurt" then "ack we are almost dead." then "yay here goku comes to save us"

but back to the forum: I thought we were only talking about pure blood saiyans, half saiyans might be pretty cool too.

Yeah, I'm talking about the whole thing here. Saiyans, rules for half-bloods, stuff like that. Just so ya' know, though, I use a variation of the Racial Points rules in Asgard 1.

Anyway, yeah, I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate everything Saiyan. I'm not using the Dragonball plot, just the race. I'll make changes as needed for balance reasons. I just want to gather ideas before I put anything together.

For instance, when ability modifiers do you believe to work? What special abilities? How should their abilities be incorporated into the game? How do you handle a Saiyan going Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, or even Super Saiyan 4? How about Fusion via Fusion Dance or Potarra? How about Mystic Super Saiyan? Legendary Super Saiyan? Oozaru? Golden Oozaru?

These are the things that are diffficult to balance.

Also, what about the fighting skills? Most (except for Trunks, who uses a sword) use their fists, yet I feel that the Monk class doesn't work in any way, shape, or form due to the Lawful requirement and such . . . In other words, we need a martial arts core class that is similar to Monk but without the strict requirements, or just change Monk to "Martial Artist" and remove the alignment requirement, but then some of the abilities don't make sense.

Also, would Saiyans have DR? One would think so, considering some stronger ones can't be harmed by even missiles.

This is what is so difficult. I once asked a friend: "How would you put Saiyans into D&D?" His response: "You don't."

A lot of people are using the super power rules from Natural 20 Press's Four-Color to Fantasy to create races. Because the super power rules let you determine effective character level, you can basically create nearly any race you'd want. Just decide what stat bonuses, powers, and restrictions you want the race to have, and it should be easy to come up with character powers.

By the way, Saiyan was one of the example 'super heroes' that my otaku friend used to help me playtest the rules. We had a 20th-level deathmatch between a version of the Incredible Hulk, and Vegeta. It was pretty evenly matched, until we realized that Vegeta was able to just fly around and kamehameha the Hulk from the air, without fear of retribution. The same way that a high-level fighter would be out of luck if he was fighting a high-level sorcerer.

From that, we figured out that our playtest rules had undervalued energy blast attacks. And plus I decided to write rules for throwing stuff (a Hulk classic), which helped even the playing field. Now the Hulk can just throw hunks of sod, or trees, or whatever, several hundred feet if necessary.

Everyone's perception of the Saiyans is different, though (and I don't have the stats on my hard-drive, just a scrap of paper), so I won't bother posting the stats here unless you ask.
