2009 in Review

Edgewood

First Post
So now that 2009 is coming to a close we have had another eventful year in the RPing industry. With that in mind, what were the highlights for you in 2009? What were some of the low points and what do you look forward to in 2010?

I'll start,

Highlights:
Pathfinder RPG
Actually getting a group together to play Pathfinder RPG
Warhammer Fantasy 3rd Edition

Low points:
The passing of Dave Arneson
Central Canada Comic Con in Winnipeg Manitoba (really lackluster this year)

2010:
More Pathfinder
More gaming
A more folks to join my gaming group.

High Points
4e books who kept their high standard
Playing 4e
Having a blast playing 4e
Writing and getting published for 4e - Even though it - as most 4e 3PP stuff - it was no huge hit - it was incredibly satisfying process to experience.

Low Point
Not being able to log on to my favorite RPG-site without having to read people slamming my favorite game.

Playing and GMing lots of Pathfinder
$5 PDF of Pathfinder at GenCon
Getting to hold the preview copy of the Pathfinder Bestiary at GenCon
Beta test for Pathfinder Advanced Players Guide
Mysteries of the Hollow Earth for HEX
GenCon still the best four days of gaming
Restarting of a home campaign
Wasting lots of time on my computer playing Dragon Age
Slaying the High Dragon in Dragon Age
The release of the Dragon Age RPG PDF from Green Ronin so now I can waste even more time at my gaming table
Desolation: Survivors book finally released
Fantasy Craft
Finding a brand new copy of the 4e DMG II for only $12 a couple of months after it released

Low Points
4e slowly becoming the game I don't want to play anymore
Not being able to buy lots of awesome gaming stuff I wanted to try and play
Despite playing more games still not playing enough

2010
My girlfriend having my baby
Pathfinder thrives
Runequest II
Next version of Hackmaster
Even more Dragon Age (videogame and RPG)

Forming a gaming group from scratch, and running my first game (SW Saga) in 5 years.
The campaign is well under way, and everyone seems to be having fun.
Returning to the Chicago Gameday after a 7-year hiatus, and running my first "con" game.
Getting hired as editor for Alluria Publishing and working on every product they've released has been awesome.

Low Points
We don't have a particularly good place to play, but we make do.

2010
Far more gaming than 2009!
Ideally, our group (currently 3 PCs) finds a new player.
Hopefully more editing gigs as well!

4e got a lot better with the release of the PHBII and the power books
Played from H2 to E1, and it was pretty good. Especially the combat bits.
Got to start a new Deadlands Campaign.

Low Points
Watching the DDI/non-DDI split in 4E get bigger and bigger and bigger.
Lotta grind in H2 to E1, plus not enough story. More the DM than the modules
Not a whole lotta new books to buy.

2010
Dark Sun, Dark Sun, Dark Sun!!!!!
More fence sitting between 3.5 and 4E for me. I run and play both

Overall a good year for gaming for me.

Let's see, limiting my list to just game-related stuff...

High Point of 2009 in gaming for me
* Gaming as a player (and occasional DM) with a consistent group that is more fun than social headache (not that the later doesn't happen, but for the year overall, the fun outweighs the social headache)

Low Point of 2009 in gaming for me
* Having to end one campaign before it's time due to outside factors (it just made me feel miserable for all sorts of reasons)

2010 in gaming for me
* Looking forward to more gaming :)
* Looking forward to reading interesting game books
* Hoping there will be fewer "doomsayers" about the end of D&D due to industry occurance X or editions or what not....and instead just relaxing and enjoying the game (whatever game) in the 'now'

Highpoints - Continual release of classic material for Dragon Warriors.
- Release of Doctor Who AiT&S.
- Knowing that the first lot of completely new material for Dragon Warriors will be out in early 2010.

Lowpoints - Can't really think of any. There was a lot of WHFRP/D&D edition war background noise, but as I've never played either one I just kind of ignored it.

High Points:

- Switching one group to a regular schedule and keeping to it
- DDI Character Builder and Monster Builder
- A laptop (my very first) usable at the game table
- Mortaneus' Combat Tracker
- Feeling no need to buy lots of D&D books

Low Points:

- Losing one player who is moving abroad
- Death of a good friend and player's father
- These two points led to the near disintegration of one group

Hopefully, 2010 will bring:

- A German version of WFRP 3e
- The death of edition wars
- No new and different sub-systems for 4e
- A group I can join as player.
