D&D 3E/3.5 [3.5] Must have monk items?

jaults

First Post
We are playing Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil, and one of the PCs is a Human Monk9/Ftr1. The monk is our primary fighter; the rest of the party is a luck/earth cleric, a druid and a rogue (although we'll be getting an archer/mage soon). We recently decided it was time to go shopping, since we have collected nearly 20k gold worth of treasure per person.

The monk currently has bracers that make his punches flaming (extra 1d6 fire damage per punch). He also has a Monk's Belt, a Ring of Protection +1, a Cloak of Resistance +1, Boots of Elvenkind, a Ring of Climbing, Goggles of Eagle's Eye, a Brooch of Shielding and some random potions.

My first suggestion is to dump the Brooch and get a Periapt of Wisdom. What else should he be shopping for?

Thanks,
Jason

Unless you have Weapon Finesse, gloves/belt of Str +N.

Actually, _even_ if you have Weapon Finesse, gloves/belt of Str +N. If the monk is the main fighter, that means being able to contribute in a fight.

Is your party druid casting barkskin on you every day? Yes? Good. Wands of barkskin are too expensive to recommend.

A wand of mage armor, OTOH, is a must-have: buy it for the wizard joining the party, and get a zot from it every day. Split the cost with the party druid, assuming said druid ever enters combat wildshaped.

Getting your ring of protection bumped up wouldn't be a bad idea, either.

I'm not sure what sources you're allowed to use, but Tiger Leap Sandals from Sword & fist are nice for a monk (double damage on charge), The hand wraps that give +5 to Stun DC is also pretty sweet.
However since you are the frontline fighter you'll definitely need to focus on a) Armor class and b) damage output. Since monks don't have alot of HP I'd focus more on High AC so Rings of Protection, Bracers of Armor (or wand of Mage Armor), and as someone else mentioned a wand of Barkskin. It may become expensive but wands of Mirror Image and blur might be pretty useful too.

Baron, you don't want a wand of barkskin if there's a druid in the party: barkskin improves according to caster level, and a wand that approximates the PC's caster level is gonna be really really expensive. Wands of mirror image won't work: that spell has a target of self only. Blur would work, OTOH.

Potions of mirror image would work. Quite expensive, and you won't get the level bump up, but it could come in handy for the big fights.

Excellent point, Dinkeldog. Another item you might want to consider is a little unconventional: diamond dust.

You pay for it, the druid casts stoneskin on you, and you get a major boost in major battles. Good stuff!

As long as we're on the wand front, if you're a tripper-monk, consider a wand of enlarge person. Have the party wizard zap you with it before a battle, and you get a +5 on all trip attempts.

Plus your reach has just increased - add that with combat reflexes for AoOs on those guys trying to stand and you are better than a Grease spell.

Potions of enlarge help too, when the casters can't, and even a reduce potion might come in handy for him. Think of all of those things that the rogue might not be able to do and get some potions to aid you. Also you can get something to help your tumble you will be able to cross to the backlines and flank with the rogue nearly every turn either of you have.

Otherwise, spend the cash on a better ring of protection or something else that will upgrade your AC. Granted it's not as fun but you will live longer.
