That's certainly a strange story, considering feral cats usually want nothing to do with humans...

Even that one time where I approached a mother with her kittens, the mother stayed behind observing me while the kittens ran away.

Bitten on legs and arms? Here's an alternative explanation.

Woman is out walking her dog. Dog barks, perhaps even lunges at a bunch of cats, gets into altercation. Woman, being not so bright, steps up and reaches in, trying to get cats off her dog, gets scratched and bitten on the parts most available to the cats - arms and legs - possibly falling down in the middle of the ruckus. In the aftermath, she rewrites the story a bit, so that the cats attacked her.

Because, unless they're rabid, no, standard cats don't gang up on humans.
