D&D 5E (5e) Assume max stat = 14. Which melee class will do the most damage?

FrogReaver

As long as i get to be the frog
I always assume 6 encounters a day at 4 rounds an encoutner. I assume 2 short rests. Assume 50% to hit.

At level 5 which melee class will do the most damage?
At level 8 which melee class will do the most damage?

Sample Calculation.
Paladin level 5:
Paladin with great weapon fighting style and a greatsword = (assuming a 50% chance to hit)
(8.33 + 2) * 2 * .5 = 10.33 Damage per turn. 24 turns. = 247.92
Divine smite: 8d8 + 6d8 = 36 + 27 = 63

Total damage per day = 310.92

Rogue level 5
1d6 + 2 + 1d6 * .5 = 4.5 per turn from attacks. 4.5*24 = 108
sneak attack = 3d6 * .75 = 7.875 per turn. 24 turns = 189

Total Damage per day = 297

Your Rogue 5 calculations could use 3d8+2 for weapon damage if using Booming Blade with a rapier. Although, your Paladin could get an extra 2d8 by the same virtue.

Barbarian 2 / rogue 3, twf, reckless, SA
reckless = {1d6+2 + 1d6} * .75 + 2d6 * .9375 = 13.3125 per turn = 319.5
rage = 8 * 2 + 6 * 2 = 28 damage {2 bonus actions for rage}

Total damage per day = 347.5

Barbarian 2 / sorcerer 3, mace, BB, 11 SP
reckless BB = 2d6+1d8+2 * .75 = 10.125 per turn = 243
twinned = 11 * 10.125 = 111.375 {16 turns without rage}
rage = 8 * 2 = 16 damage {8 turns with rage}

Total damage per day = 370.375

Barbarian 5, mace, reckless
reckless = (2d6+2)*2 * .75 = 13.5 per turn = 324
rage = 8 * 2 * 2 = 32 damage

Total damage per day = 356

Human War Cleric with Magic Initiate for Greenfire and Booming Blade. Not considering criticals or conditional damage (such as adjacency for greenfire or movement for booming), picking up GWM at level 4. All spell slots go into Spiritual Weapon. Using a greatsword. Only using -5/+10 in conjunction with the War Domain's CD (so it becomes (+5/+10):
Level 5: 286.625
Level 8: 429

By level 5 you're rolling 3 dice for your main attack, and you gain a floating die of damage at level 8, so criticals should increase those numbers a bit.

And I haven't used the level 8 feat, so not the most optimized.

Edit: with criticals:
Level 5: 307.125
Level 8: 450.5

Edit 2: whoops, didn't notice you get a second use of CD at level 6. Will have to rework level 8 values.

Edit 3: Done

Edit 4: No I'm not, I forgot the two BAAs for the encounter where you can't use Spiritual Weapon at level 5.

Edit 5: Fixed.

Edit 6: Finally all correct. God damn napkin maths.

Edit 7: Actually it's not, but I give up: the level 5 numbers are ballpark: they're actually slightly lower because War Cleric and Greenflame/Booming don't play nice. Level 8 figures should be pinpoint accurate though.

It doesn't work with Extra Attack. So while Rogue would benefit, the Paladin would lose out from using it.

Following the idea of Yunru, Beastmaster Ranger might shine because it breaks the rules.

Talking abotu rangers, while the cap to +2 hurts multiple attacks, I wonder if hunter's mark could bring it back up. A Hunter Ranger with Horde Breaker and Two Weapon Fighting Style can get 3-4 attacks a round reliably. (2 extra attack, 1 bonus action if not needing to cast/change target of hunter's mark, 1 from horde breaker if there is a second enemy adjacent to you and another target.)

Each attack would be ( 3.5 (1d6 short sword) + 2 + 3.5 (1d6 hunter's mark) ) * 0.5 = 4.5 per attack.

Going with half the time (12 rounds) you manage to get the full four attacks and the other half you get three:

12 * 4.5 * 4 = 216
12 * 4.5 * 3 = 162

378 damage per day

You should write your calculations so people can follow your battle plan.

BB = 2d6+1d8+2 * .5 = 6.75 per turn = 162
spiritual weapon bonus action = 1d8+2 * .5 = 3.25 per turn = 65 {5 battles}
CD on BB = 2d6+1d8+2 * .25 = 3.375 * 3 = 10.125 {not counted}
CD on GWM = 10 * 3 * .75 = 22.5 {not counted}
try GWM until CD use = 2d6+1d8+12 = 23.5 per CD = 70.5 {replaces both CD, .5+.25+.125+...=1}
WC = {2d6+2 + 2d6+2} * .5 = 9 per turn = 4.5

Total damage per day = [-]247.875[/-] 302 {using 2 feats}
[-]Total damage per day = 297.5 {using GWM until you need CD to convert to hit}[/-] {embedded}

Level 5:
At 50% accuracy:
4 attacks at 2d6+2 (2 non-BB, War Cleric for 2 more as BAAs)
19 attacks at 2d6+1d8+2 (standard attack with BB)
12 attacks at 1d8+2 (2nd level SW)
8 attacks at 2d8+2 (3rd level SW)
At 75% accuracy:
3 attacks at 2d6+1d8+12 (CD and GWM)

Plus criticals.

Level 8:
At 50%:
18 attacks at 2d6+1d8+2 (standard attack with BB)
8 attacks at 3d8+2 (4th level SW)
12 attacks at 2d8+2 (3rd level SW)
4 attacks at 1d8+2 (2nd level SW)
At 75%:
6 attacks at 2d6+1d8+12 (CD and GWM)

Plus criticals and a floating +1d8 once per turn.

Now it's 1:30am and I'm not checking my notes so all that is off the top of my head.

Edit: Hell, it can go higher by self-blessing with your 1st level slots.

Ok thanks, 3rd SW does the same as 2nd SW. It's every 2 levels. It roughly cancels out your missing divine strikes at level 8.

I did not consider that war cleric did more than BB. That 's enough to break the 300 barrier.
And we both forgot to count the bonus action to cast SW.
