Having lived my whole life in the western US I was only ever vaguely aware of the Romani people let alone stereotypes or slurs about them. People around me used it regularly and I did too. I only learned the origin of the term in my mid-20s. Kinda blew me away how it managed to fly under the radar for so many people in my life. So don't beat yourself up about it @Gammadoodler. Plenty have made the same mistake and learning from it is the best thing we can do.
