That makes sense. I've seen exactly 0 of them used since 1e, and even then I only saw it once or twice. I've been scratching my head over how well it's doing. :p
I've seen it used extensively.
Forget it's limited use in 5e which doesn't do it any justice. WotC didn't create an interesting weapons' list - it is known. Rather look at previous editions and it's use historically.

It is a polearm, it has reach, two types of damage types (piercing and slashing), it can hook and trip effectively, great against cavalry, was historically successful in piercing armour and its a beautiful weapon aesthetically.
