That makes sense. I've seen exactly 0 of them used since 1e, and even then I only saw it once or twice. I've been scratching my head over how well it's doing.

I've seen it used extensively.
Forget it's limited use in 5e which doesn't do it any justice. WotC didn't create an interesting weapons' list - it is known. Rather look at previous editions and it's use historically.

It is a polearm, it has reach, two types of damage types (piercing and slashing), it can hook and trip effectively, great against cavalry, was historically successful in piercing armour and its a beautiful weapon aesthetically.
