5E War of the Burning Sky [IC]

"Why the hell would they bomb their own men?" He asked Torrent, angrily and confused, loud enough for all to hear. Kyrrie didn't understand it. He grew up in a community where neighbour helped neighbour in times of need, where they lived happily and in peace. This news that the enemy had been bombed by its own was.... Well it was.... Just Insanity!

He waited for all the others to leave as he continued to keep his fighting stance.

Caleb slowly pops his head up from behind the table. An awkward moment passes as he catches the eyes of one of the men with a crossbow trained on him. He raises his shield half-heartedly and begins to side-step towards the door. As he crosses the threshold, he turns to the others in the ally, "Run?"

Without waiting for an answer, he breaks out in a dash out of the alley to get a look at the city.

Kincaid looks around to make sure the others are coming as well. When he sees the impasse, he calls to the rest of his companions, "We wanted a way out, it looks like it's now or never. Let's get out of here." He begins walking quickly after Caleb, careful to keep an eye on their attackers in case any of them decides to change their plans.

"I've heard of the Black Horses," said Torrent, "and they're not a Ragesian military unit. They're--"
"Mercenaries," interjected Kathor without looking at her; he practically spat the word, apparently not very happy with his present occupation. "Maybe they wanted us to distract you. More likely the bomb strike was random and they just didn't feel it was particularly important to warn us of the impending barrage or to tell the bomber not to hit us."

[sblock=Int (History) DC 12]Ragesian dragonbombs are weapons dropped by wyvern riders. They're not truly bombs and have little explosive power. They're just a useful combination of alchemical items in a ceramic shell: a few thunderstones to provide some concussive power and ensure the shells break, alchemist's fire to ignite, and plenty of ordinary oil to spread the flames. Kyrrie turns to the side in thought for a moment, before turning to Torrent in shock. "Torrent, if the Ragesians are bombing the city and they didn't tell the mercenaries, they probably wanted for all the townspeople here to feel like nothing bad was going to happen to them. If some of the Ragesians own forces remained in here, none would suspect something like this. The sacrifice of a piece in a game of chess in order to achieve victory is often a requirement!"

He turns to look up at the burning building. "They also picked a night when everyone would be drinking and at their most vulnerable. Tactically it makes sense. What if they have a massive army outside the wall and after the bombing, they swarm in."

He points to the mercenaries. "Furthermore, if they've treated those guys as expendable, they will probably kill them off too! In case of any resentment they might feel after being bombed. These Ragesians are absolutely MAD!" We have to get out of here if what i'm guessing is true. We have no time to waste."

Kincaid looks over the situation pensively. This is not at all the mission he was expecting. One moment they were planning a way to sneak out of the city, and the next they were under attack by mercenaries, and now they are caught in the middle of an assault on the city. Somebody needs to come up with a plan, but certainly not him. He's never been one to be the focus of attention, always more comfortable on the fringe, providing advice and suggestions as necessary. However, it looks like this might be one of those times. He grits his teeth and scowls.

"I imagine the Black Horses don't want to die at the Ragesians' hands just as much as we don't want to. Maybe we can work together to get to safety."

To the mercenary leader he says, "Do you know a way out of here?"

As Kincaid slowly puts together what he knows about the Black Horses, a grim smirk crosses his face. To the fallen horseman he continues, "So Kathor, Danava, is it? Are you General Danava's brother? His cousin? Why do you think he would want you killed? There's really no other explanation, I think. The General of the Ragesian army would certainly know that you were sent here tonight on a mission. If we work together to escape, you might yet live to take it up with him yourself."

Toby silently follows along. Being a Halfling he is use to big folks forgetting he is around and he takes to the shadows to make sure the group is not being followed or watched.

Kyrrie gapes at Kincaid in surprise. "Now hold on there! I didn't say that we should work with them! Just that they're probably going to be disposed of. What if this is all a trap? Some elaborate setup to get them close to us, then they can catch us off guard later?"

He turns to Torrent for an answer, "Right?" Then to some of the others "Right?". He turns back to Torrent again. "Torrent, if the city is burning, you KNOW there are certain THINGS we have to attend to now! Whatever the decision, we should not delay any longer!"

With that, he makes a couple of frustrated gestures and begins to move off, pausing and stepping back towards his party, flustered and irritated by all the confusion at their current situation.

"There are other possibilities, but now is not the time to discuss them and here is certainly not the place. Our city is under attack. I am sure we all have people and things that we wish to make sure are safe. Perhaps, we should be leaving to take care of them?"

Caleb begins to run towards the inner city where the depository is located while keeping an eye on the skies. As soon as they are out of earshot of the mercenaries, Caleb whispers to the others, "Isn't it possible that the Ragesians view whatever we are meant to retrieve tonight to be so important that they are willing to kill their own to protect it? It seems to me that it is in everyone's best interest for us to finish this mission and get out of this city."
