Hey, I like both editions
Nothing wrong with smacking a beastie with a sword. You can do this in every edition
At-wills give you a pre-made description and how you do it without having to ask the DM for the special effect.

I'm not dismissing 4E yet...but so far (and my experience is extremely limited) it feels more clunky to me that 3.x. Just my opinion. But I'm trying to give it a fair shake.
