A Whole Bunch of Zombie RPG Questions

JesterPoet

First Post
I've been dying (hehehehehe) to play a zombie RPG for a long time now. Since our resident zombie game GM has failed us for over a year at this point, I'm looking into running something instead.

So, without further ado, I present you my questions:

1) Is there a good modern zombie RPG out there? I refuse to buy All Flesh Must be Eaten, after they put out their stupid "zombie wrestling" sourcebook as their second product, but I'm happy to look at anything else. I have been looking at ads for Year of the Zombie, but don't know much about it.

2) If you happen to be a participant in the writing of any zombie rpg stuff, do you know if that stuff will have a presence at GenCon so I can check it out?

3) Are there any good zombie modules? I'd love that kind of assistance with putting a storyline together.

4) What kind of system best lends itself to the Zombie genre? It seems like you'd want something with good mass combat rules, but maybe that's not necessary.

5) Do you have any other good advice for running a good zombie game?

Year of the Zombie is a d20 Modern Template for running Dawn of the Dead'esk zombie campaigns and contains background information, zombies (of course), some new classes for the grim new world, hazards and other location, some new equipment and optional rules. Almost any flavour of zombie game is catered for as we recognise that not every GM will like the extreme vision of the world post zombie that we have.

If you haven't read the reviews on Yotz yet here are the two enworld ones:

http://www.enworld.org/reviews.php?do=review&reviewid=2476220

and

http://www.enworld.org/reviews.php?do=review&reviewid=2416066

And of course you can visit http://www.yearofthezombie.co.uk/ for more information and the Yotz discussion boards.

Unfortunately we will not be at Gencon Indy this year, however I will be running 4 sessions of Independence Day Massacre (our first Yotz adventure) at Gencon UK and I believe Tim (the author) is planning on making it to Gencon SoCal.

Well we went with d20 Modern, so I guess I should say that ;) As for advices there are a number of threads on our forums at the above address which would give you some insight into this and you could always ask there to see what other Yotz players can recommend.

I’m Taking Part in the Ronin Arts, RPGObjects, and SkeletonKey Games Online Prize Patrol!
AHHH! This is a crying shame!

May I introduce you to Blood and Brains: The Zombie Hunter's Guide: http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=2879&Src=EnWorld

It's about zombies. It's from RPGObjects. You two were made for each other. :)

(it's also been sitting in the top ten D20 Modern Horror products for half a year, for reasons I don't fully understand)

2) If you happen to be a participant in the writing of any zombie rpg stuff, do you know if that stuff will have a presence at GenCon so I can check it out?
As you may have guessed, I'm the author of Blood and Brains. Chris of RPGObjects is hard at work on creating a print version of the book, but we (my wife and I) edited/revised the book so heavily it requires reformatting. I don't think it will be available in time for Gen Con, but it will eventually be available in print.

Chris will be there, and RPGObjects is my new "home base" at the con since Face-2-Face Games won't be attending, so it's likely you'll find me at the booth as well. We can certainly answer any questions you may have.

3) Are there any good zombie modules? I'd love that kind of assistance with putting a storyline together.
For a more thorough campaign sourcebook, you should really consider Year of the Zombie by UKG Publishing. It's a full "zombie apocalypse" kind of game that you can use as a setting: http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=5009&Src=ENWorld

I have a bunch of adventure seeds (gamer lingo for, "I was too lazy to write up an actual adventure, but hey it's free) at: http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=3098&Src=EnWorld

Also, check out Independence Day Massacre, an adventure for Year of the Zombie: http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=510&products_id=5066&Src=ENWorld

4) What kind of system best lends itself to the Zombie genre? It seems like you'd want something with good mass combat rules, but maybe that's not necessary.
D20 Modern of course!

Other free stuff for D20 Modern zombies:
* National Center for Reanimation Prevention and Control (NCRPC) faction: http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=3098&Src=EnWorld

As a zombie fan, you are legally required to own the Zombies!!! boardgame/RPG, which comes with a million zombies along with its expansions: http://enworld.rpgshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=15552&
* Zombies!!! 3.5: Not Dead Yet!: http://enworld.rpgshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=33468&
* Zombies!!! 3: Mall Walkers: http://enworld.rpgshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=32446&
* Zombies!!! 4: The End: http://enworld.rpgshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=35027&
* Zombies!!!: Bag O' Zombies: http://enworld.rpgshop.com/product_info.php?products_id=31243&

5) Do you have any other good advice for running a good zombie game?
Year of the Zombie is good for that. Blood and Brains has some advice too, but it's more tongue-in-cheek.

Almost forgot...check out the home page for the National Center for Reanimation Prevention and Control: http://michael.tresca.net/ncrpc

Hope that helps!

Have no fear.... While I don't own Zombies!!! the only friend I have who would play it with me does.

Eden Studios' All Flesh Must Be Eaten

Unfortunately, while their initial relase held promise (even though the book seemed overpriced) their release of the Zombie wrestling supplement (as their second release, mind you) totally turned me off to the system.

But it wasn't their second product. It was, like, their fifth or sixth product.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to recommend All Flesh Must Be Eaten. It's that good.

I ran a local zombie campaign recently just using the d20 Modern core rules and creating the zombie stats from scratch. No sourcebooks or anything. Fun times. If you get this campaign up and running, notify me. I've been looking for a fun zombie game.

Step One: Watch Shaun of the Dead
Step Two: Use d20 Modern & the zombie templates from Libris Mortis
Step Three: Comedy!

Well, at least that's how I did it.
Worked out quite well for a one-shot actually.

There is a 2e Ravenloft module that I ran in a 12 hour welcome to ravenloft game that worked really well. I forget the name but it was something like night of the living dead. It is in a bayou domain run by a zombie lord.
