Brief overview of Delve Delve is notable in that nearly every building is composed of stone. In the first few days of wandering the city, Oceas and Tyrm note a handful of buildings built from wood. They are small shacks and they appear to be exceptions to the norm. The wall that surrounds the city is stout with enough room for three men to walk abreast along the top. There are parapets along it and there is a constant patrol. Several small watch towers ring the walls. They are not highly defensible, but would provide suitable protection from light projectiles outside the city. Each watch tower has a bell, presumably used to raise the alarm. It is a subtle thing, but there are several spots within the city, near the walls, show faded, washed away scorch marks. Almost as if there have been small fires in the city in the past. In the city center, near the Baron's keep, there are open parks. There are a few churchs in the same area as well. In most cities, these would be the types of areas where merchant stalls would accumulate. Indeed, there is at least one open market area in Delve. But near the keep, it appears that merchants are not welcome to setup stalls. Each morning, the miners prepare to leave the city. Almost all of them carry their picks to and from the mines each day. Several are also equipped with crossbows. The miners gather onto wagons that are driven by armed and armored men before they are then driven out of the city. In the evenings, the wagons return with the miners. It appears that once or twice a week, the ore that the miners dig up is also brought down to the city. There are a few smelters and several smithies within the city. After a couple of days, Oceas and Tyrm also note a wagon train bringing mushrooms and butchered meat down into the city. A little time spent gathering information reveals that some of the spent mines have been turned into mushroom farms. There are also some difficult to access sheep pastures in the hills. It is from these farms and pastures that a significant portion of the city's food comes from. Tyrm is able to quickly determine that there is a relatively affluent upper class of nobles in the city. These nobles control individual mines. The miners are aligned with these noble families as labor. The nobles provide armed guards and protection from the goblins and ogres that infest the mountains and hills. When a mine is no longer productive, the noble families look to turn it into a mushroom farm. The goblins are known to attack food wagons and it is not uncommon for a wagon to be taken when a wagon train is bringing food to the city. Ogre and Goblin attacks against the city itself happen a couple of times a season. The city is relatively well guarded and because the buildings in the city are stone, it is difficult for the humanoids to do much permanent harm. For the most part, the people of Delve would rather let supplies be taken than suffer the loss of a life.
