Monks, especially at higher levels, are great for frustrating a dungeon master. This is especially true if you play up the defensive strengths of the Monk with your build. Having all good saves, the ability to dodge spells and recieve no damage, slow fall, movement bonuses . . . keep with it, and soon enough the DM will wonder "Why can't I lock him down?"
Maneuverability is your freind. In a few levels, you should be able to dash from one end of the battle feild to the other, lock down foes while the fighter catches up, and a few other tricks. Ki abilities add additional flexibility. In 4e terms, the Pathfinder monk is a blend of striker and controller.
