An Aboleth Lair!

Ion

Explorer
Any days now my PCs are going to have to storm into an Aboleth's lair and retrieve out the giant fire opal they misplaced. (They really though "If we put it in a crate at the bottom of the castle moat it will be safe. :D )

Now given that an Aboleth can use illusory wall, mirage arcana, persistent image, programmed image, project image and veil at will what should his lair look like? What sorts of traps and tricks will be in place?

(For consideration the PCs are a lvl 6 necromancer, lvl 6 druid, lvl 6 monk, lvl 6 bard and lvl 4/2 ranger/rogue)

One of my current ideas is to have the Aboleth cast veil on some of it's Skum guards to disguise them as the PCs. Fighting things that look exactly like you is a classic ;)

Illusionary walls/railings in front of very real cliffs or drops into boiling water = comedy gold

Illusionary bridges over chasms = fun for the whole family

Hungry ghouls in cages disguised as crying children = a real crowd-pleaser
