My player and I are disagreeing. So far I have been asking for an attack roll whenever he uses AoE spells... he believes AoE auto hits and no attack is required. Both of us believe we read something in support of our stance in the book, but neither of us can find it. Regardless, can anyone guide us on the matter of attack roll when shooting for example a cone of fire. Is it Mag + evocation vs Range Defense of all in AoE?

Yes, you make one attack roll and apply it to all within the target area.

After re-reading the section on grenades in NOW, that makes sense. I had missed that grenades require multiple rolls to hit; one for the target square, and one for each creature w/in 5' of that square.

The hitting the target square is more a formality - it's so easy to do. If you're several range increments away, though, it might be harder.
