Assassin vine question

Hello everyone,

In my gaming group we are having a minor disagreement over the attack mode of the assassin vine. According to the description of the vine it is a 20 foot long vine with tendrils sticking out of it. The monster also has a 10 foot reach. Now we are divided into two ideas of how this would work.

1 - The vine has a central root and has a 10 foot reach from that central point. Basically the 20 foot long vine reaches out and grabs a target and the tendrils also wrap around the target as well.

2 - The vine is a 20 foot long segment lying on the ground (unmoving) and the tendrils extend out 10 feet from the central vine. Then the tendrils attack the target.

Obviously depending on which of the two methods is used the total threat area greatly changes.
Option one has a 10 foot reach from the central root so it threatens 25 hexes (1 for the center + 8 at 5 feet + 16 at 10 feet).
Option two has a 10 foot reach from the complete length of the vine. Assume a straight line vine on the ground. That gives a total threat area of 40 hexes (4 for the vine + 14 at 5 feet + 22 at 10 feet).

Opinions are welcome, but if you had an official source to back you up to clarify this it would be better.

Thanks in advance,

Richard
