I disagree with some of the previous posters in the strongest terms possible. Mystic Theurge is absolutely essential for getting your caster level up so you can dispel without breaking a sweat. You'll want to specialize in abjuration, then take the Theurgic Specialist feat, which allows you to stack your arcane and divine caster levels when casting abjurations. This way, each MT level will effectively boost your CL for dispels by 2, and none of the multiclassing before MT is wasted. If you want a really high CL, tack on Practiced Spellcaster.

Also, no one has explained Arcane Mastery, which allows you to take 10 on caster level checks - though I see one person mentioned it. It is very helpful when you already have a higher CL than normal for your level.

Somehow I'm guessing that a dragon mag feat (especially theurgic specialist, by the sound of it) would not be allowed in play heh. :p

If you're going to talk balance, Theurgic Specialist is far less broken than some other things that come out of Dragon. ;) But yes, you ought to clear it with your DM first.

Are you allowed to use third party sources? If so, check out HohF: Elves. They have spell ward feats. You have to sac spells early as a reserve, but counters are instant effects (no need to ready an action). The higher level feats allow you to bounce the spell back (via spell turning) or absorb the spell energy so you can cast soemthing else.

I'm operating on memory alone here, so you might want to double check (I'll check my copy when I get home). It's on sale on this site if you're interested. Rather cheap too.

Might I also suggest Dampen Spell from PHB II, for those times when you might be in a jam with no spells of the appropriate school prepared at the time.

Dampen Spell seems to be a questionable use of resources, as it doesn't do anything but lower a spell's save DC, and requires giving up a fairly high-level slot to make a noticable difference. Has anyone done a cost-benefit analysis of this?
