I would say it depends on your character alignments. If true law, then too bad he's out of luck, if you're lawful good, then you should prolly pay, if it's chaotic anything, then too bad.
If he's chaotic anything then why does he care? If he's true law, then too bad he should abide by the deal. If he's law good, then he should do the right thing and honor the previous deal, if he's law evil, then he's in character.
