These ferocious creatures look like large, monstrous bugbears, but even more savage in appearance. They stand 16 feet tall. Their head is that of a dire bear's, and they are equally at home on all fours as they are on their hind legs.

Combat
They attack as dire bears do.

Well that certainly is a lot of Bear... I wouldn't want to run into one even in the deepest darkest recesses of the Underdark.

So who or what created the crossbreed, to they use armor (like most other humanoids), what about weapons and favored class (I would say Barbarian)???

Definately Barbarian, for a favored class.

I would think they would be too ...animalistic... to wear armor or wield weapons, although perhaps a Huge greatclub might work.

But who or what created the creature? A deity? Illithids? Drow? An Insane Lich? A Fiendish Being? A Dragon? An Infusion of Chaos? What?

Come on! Pick one, make up a story, convince people that it is worthy of their campaigns. When I create a monster, may it be a hybrid or othervise, I tend to look for a good sound reason to it's existance.

I thought up a name

It could be called the 'BuggerBear,' on accounta if'n y'meet one in d'woods, yer buggered, and it's definitely bugger than a normal bugbear.

I agree that monster backgrounds are best left up to individual DMs to fill in.

Somehow I can't think of these being outfitted as a humanoid (armor, weapons, etc).

I think a Leursine (lion-bear) would be another good idea.
