In terms of wanting a photoshop like program, try searching for GIMP. It's free, much like photoshop, but unintuitive to people who are unfamiliar with lunix style programs.

GIMP has made a lot of improvements recently so if you're a lready familiar with Photoshop, GIMP won't be too strange. http://gimp.org/
