I can't move a rules thread from General Discussion right now, so I'm reposting it here!

From Alegelos:

Can an immobilized and knocked prone creature/PC can stand up even if he is immobilized?

Most of the time, yes, since you normally do not need to move from your space to stand up, and all immobilize does is to restrict you from moving from your space (PHB 277).

However, in the (rare) case your square is occupied by an ally (or other creature, for that matter) -- which can happen when prone (PHB 283, "Ending Movement") -- you must shift out of your square as part of standing up (PHB 292). Since Immobilize disallows this shift, it also disallows the stand; so in this one case, a prone immobilized character cannot stand up.

Yes, you can stand up.

Immobilized does not mean paralyzed, it merely means you cannot move from your square.... but it does not stop all physical action like attacking or anything like that. So you can move in the technical sense of 'you can move your arm to swing a sword' but you cannot move in the sense of the walk action or forms of movement.

what i mean is.

Since PHB-1 say that u cant move from your "space".

And later it say that Space is the squares u ocupie.

Since u r prone u ocuppie just 1x1 saquare cause u are at the ground. So maybe u just can stand up since u will ocuppie 2x1 squares. So theoricaly u r moving 1 square up right?

What if the immobilized player then some how jump or something and stay just at the 1x1 upper squeare he was before? so he moved one square up :S

Whether prone or not, a PC (being a medium-sized creature) occupies just a single square - it's an abstraction which doesn't take tallness or other asymmetry into account.

Dude, you are totally overthinking the whole thing. DnD is a very abstract combat system. If you apply real world logic to a fantasy game it all breaks down. Just go with the fact that a 6 to 7 foot tall character can fall prone in a 5 square and not leave it. ;)

Just think of immobilized as being tethered to the square you're in. While tethered, you can stand, sit, attack, and otherwise act normally, except that you can't leave the square you're tethered to (unless you teleport).
