Can Bards use staves, wands etc.?

I've never played a bard before and I'm currently making one for an epic campaign and was wondering if bards can use staves, rods and wands?

Can a cleric? Can a wizard? Can a sorcerer?

You'll notice that nowhere in the rules for spell trigger items (staffs and wands) does it mention specific classes. This should be a strong clue.

Yeap, bards can use them. Using them directly, it's just spells on their spell list, so many of the items may be of partial use at best.

Plus, bards get the use magic device skill as a class skill, which at epic levels lets them use just about everything. (Note that "use a wand" also covers use a staff as listed in the skill description.) For example, if you have a staff with a spell you want, it's a flat DC of 20 or emulate as if it was on your class list. And since staves already let you use your own CL and bard gets full advancement, it can be pretty sweet. Plus UMD lets them use just everything else as well. With 23 ranks (from 20 levels of the skill-point-heavy bard) plus charisma which should be very high for an epic bard, you've got everything made. The hardest to actual active (besides just deciphering) is emulating an alignment at DC 30, which you shouldn't be able to miss.

Have fun,

To use a wand or staff without the use of Use Magic Device, the spell(s) in the wand or staff have to be on the bard spell list. As Blue noted, in the case of staffs, which have mulitple different spells in them, a bard might find that he can use some of the spells in a staff, but can't use others (because they're not on the bard spell list).

As Blue also noted, the Use Magic Device skill (which is a class skill for bards) would let you use a wand or staff. The DC on that is only a DC 20, which an epic-level bard would likely be able to make automatically.

Rods aren't spell-trigger items in 3E/3.5, and they can be used by anyone.
