THIS WEEK IN GREYHAWK FANDOM
19 September, 2002

Greetings Greyhawk fans!
Welcome to this issue of This Week in Greyhawk Fandom! Things are somewhat quite in the community right now, but we've dug around a bit to deliver the usual helping of useful and inspirational websites. For those who have missed previous issues of this newsletter, keep in mind that each week's issue is available on the Canonfire! website.
If you have a scoop you think would be of interest to the Greyhawk community, or if you have any questions, comments or suggestions, feel free to contact me directly at richadmin@canonfire.com. Thanks for your support!

The Thieves of Mitrik - Arcus Stanton - By Daniel Harrison and MerricB

Unpublished information from the Living Greyhawk Journal article "Artifacts of Oerth" (which appeared in Dragon Magazine #294, April 2002)
The Dreamer-Minstrel and others - Quasi Deities of Oerth - By MerricB
Those that wander the Flanaess should be aware of the great of the land. This article introduces both players and DMs to a number of notable personages from Cirrem's World of Greyhawk, but adaptable for use in your campaigns.
All of these, and the rest of the over 300 articles, can be found via Canonfire's home page, http://www.canonfire.com

News at the Wizards of the Coast Website:
There's not a lot of new Greyhawk related material on the site right now, but I'd like to highlight a couple of features the Greyhawk fan might find of interest.
D&D Fight Club: Illiarnatha -- Drider Fighter The D&D fight club is a regular feature they have that introduces new NPCs to challenge your players, and also includes a write up and map of a sample gladiatorial type arena. Illiarnartha seems inspired by the City of the Spider Queen adventure they just put out, but could easily be placed into a campaign based around Fred Weining's excellent Vault of the Drow setting for 3rd edition D&D.http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/fc/fc20020913a. There's tons of other NPCs there for free download too, so be sure to look around.
Monster Manual 2 live chat with authors Jeff Grubb, Rich Redman, Skip Williams, and Steve Winters. Friday Sept. 20th at 8pm EST http://www.wizards.com/chat. If you're not already a member of the Wizards Online chat community, you'll have to register an account there first. It's free, but can take a couple hours to process, so do it early if you want to hit the chat.
I thought things were slowing down! (Their title, not mine, heh) Wizards showcases a bunch of new and upcoming products here, so if you're interested in keeping up to date with the official 3rd edition product line, this is the place to go. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/iw/iw20020913a

GenCon 2003 report:
More information on Gencon Southern California, mentioned here last week.http://www.gencon.com. No details yet, but GenCon LLC has confirmed that a So Cal GenCon event will be held at the San Diego Convention in San Diego, Ca. in November of 2003. Great news for all the west coast fans out there.

ENWorld 3rd edition and D20 site roundup:
D&D and Greyhawk creator E. Gary Gygax is still participating in that general Q&A session on the ENWorld message boards. The thread is somewhat lighthearted and 'noisy', but Gary manages to shed some light on current projects and reflect on past ones, you can read it at http://enworld.cyberstreet.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22566. ENWorld has also posted a transcript of a recent chat with Col. Gygax in their chat room, available at http://www.d20reviews.com/chat.htm, where you can also learn more about the ENWorld chats, read transcripts of other past chats with industry luminaries, and keep track of upcoming events.
Also of interest on the ENWorld boards this week are threads about the recent wave of layoffs at WotC, rethinking the role of the 'cannon fodder' humanoids in the D&D game, life after phase one of WotC's big setting search contest, and much more. Visit ENWorld's boards at http://enworld.cyberstreet.com/.

Mortality.Net D&D site roundup:
Mortality.Net is quickly making a name for itself as the other big D&D fansite, and for at least one good reason: fans of all editions of the game are welcome! Mortality hosts a message board forum that features a dedicated Greyhawk folder frequented by a fairly small but loyal bunch of Greyhawkers. You can visit Mortality.Net's boards at http://mortality.net/board/, the Greyhawk folder is in the official published settings category, about half way down the index page.

Realms of Evil Games roundup:
Realms of Evil Games is another up and coming D&D fansite worth checking out for their dedicated Greyhawk discussion forum. Visit Realms of Evil Games' forums at http://www.dreadgazebo.com/cgi-bin/forums/YaBB.cgi.

GreyTalk mailing list roundup:
The Greytalk discussion list is the oldest and biggest Greyhawk forum on the web, and boasts quite a few of the setting's published authors and prolific fans. Current topics include political correctness is gaming books, siege warfare, and the real world analogies to the Flan people of Oerth.
For information on joining the list, visit the Canonfire! site FAQ at http://www.canonfire.com/html/modules.php?name=FAQ
To browse the GreyTalk list archives, visit http://www.greycitadel.com/greycitadel/greytalk.nsf
Don't like email lists? You can now participate in the GreyTalk discussions via Canonfire's fully integrated message board interface, which allows fully reading and posting priveleges to the list, in the message board format many of you prefer. Visit http://www.canonfire.com/forum to check it out.

Canonfire! Author Spotlight:
This week's featured author is Iquander. Iquander's articles are a series of 'apocrypha' that was left on the cutting room floor when the Living Greyhawk Journal went to press, including historical looks at such things as the Cairn Builders, Exag, and the 9 gods Zagyg once imprisoned beneath castle greyhawk. You can check out these, and all of Iquander's other articles at my Canonfire! member page, http://www.canonfire.com/html/modules.php?name=Your_Account&op=userinfo&uname=iquander.

That wraps up this week's edition of This Week in Greyhawk Fandom. Check back next week for more up to the date information on the setting and its fans.

I did post the first couple issues on RGFD, but have since stopped. First and foremost, I'm stuck with AOL's crappy newsreder right now, which makes browsing and posting usenet extremely unpleasant. Secondly, the newsletter got almost no response there. Third, we have a serious problem with material being taken from GreyTalk and reposted there without the permission of or proper credit to the original author (including myself in the past), I won't have any part of a community that tolerates that.
