Casting through AMF

First Post
My party ran into a beholder the other day. The beholder was sitting at one of end a corridor with meat shield monsters ready to pound on the PCs and the party was at the other end. The party casters used Flame Strikes and other conjuration effects to kill the beholder so that the melee types could take care of the meat shield.

It doesn't seem right to me that the casters should be able to cast spells on one side of the Anti Magic Field to effect the other. Or that they should be able to cast spells that would appear in the AMF when the beholder closes his eye. Would the AMF block Line of effect?

Thoughts?

Astral Admin - Mwahahaha!
AMF blocks line of effect, they shouldn't have been able to cast through it.

Globe of Invulnerability doesn't block LoE, but AMF sure does.

It depends on the situation. Given a high enough area, some spells can bypass the Line of Effect rules (the OP specified a corridor, so depending on height, most spells should not work there).

Flame Strike is an interesting exception to the normal line of effect rules since it actually originates 40 feet in the air and then affects downwards. One only needs LoE to its origin point.

Ditto for Storm of Vengence. If the Beholder changes its cone of Antimagic towards the Storm, it opens itself up for attacks on a more normal horizontal direction.

From the 3.0 FAQ (still applicable here):
"antimagic field blocks line of effect, so an area cannot
extend through the antimagic field. For example, if you brought
the antimagic field into a fog cloud effect, only the portion of
the fog cloud that is within the antimagic field would be
suppressed. On the other hand, if you cast antimagic field in a
corridor 10 feet wide, the fog cloud effect could not spread past
the antimagic field. Note that a spread effect will flow around
an antimagic field if it has space to do so, just as it would
spread around any other barrier."

From the Rules of the Game:
"Some things that you can see through can block line of effect, such as a wall of force or an antimagic field."
