D&D 5E Changing a player's race mid campaign

A wizard time traveled which led to a subtle series of events that made her human but left the rest of the world unchanged.

Interestingly enough, this particular player has been talking about The Mandela Effect outside of gameplay. This plays very well into that same type of idea.

True polymorph can be dispelled, so keep that in mind.

Here's a possibility (ripping off both "Willow" and Sleeping Beauty): A human child was born under a prophecy that she would forestall an archvillain's plans in some way. The archvillain got hold of the child, ripped out her soul, and tried to banish it into oblivion; but the ritual was interrupted by an elf wizard and a human hero. The hero took the child's body and fled with it, while the wizard captured the child's soul and used it to give life to a stillborn elvish baby.

Now, to fulfill the prophecy, the soul must be restored to its true body. This entails a (short) quest to find that body, which has grown to adulthood while sleeping in a magical coffin/crystal cave/castle surrounded by thorns/whatever.

Another great idea, and something she can relate to as I know she was a fan of all things Disney princess related at one time.

In superhero games we had the concept of a "Radiation Accident". Player wants to radically change up their character, GM works out an in-game reason why (and it may take a few sessions). Player happy. GM happy, they still have all the arcs and plots and story they have invested into that character in play. Wins all around.

She liked several of these ideas a lot. She ultimately decided to go with being raised by elves to believe that she was one of them, but finding out that she is actually human and that her ears were magically altered.

She just buys a Race Change potion from the Marketplace and... oh, wait, wrong game. nm.

I second this idea, moreover the general idea of "tasking" the player to create a situation that could explain the switch. It could still still involve some DM/outside elements, but tying the "switch" into an overall arc or story for her character would be great and may help in kindling new excitement for the character.

Plus, as Knaser said, the other players need not know that this wasn't a planned thing all along! I foresee stunned looks followed by high fives at the table.

If she wants to staywith the omd stats she needs to be a variant human. And needs a feat that adds +1dex at level 1. A rather underused feat might come in handy:
Weapon master: +1 dex and proficiency in the longbow she used all along.
Bit since she does't realy want to use the crossbow anymore and you might allow to rearrange some stats, actor might be the more appropriate feat.

I think so. Those are the only two things she expressed regretting about the creation of the character. She said that the race and weapon, and the way she imagined her looking, were just too similar to her previous character. She seems pretty excited about the changes, and decided to give the character a haircut with a more wild look, and that seems to be enough for her.
