Actually, changes to Halruaa makes a lot of sense after a spellplague. Halruaa is a country of wizards, and it the laws of magic changed can you imagine the chaos in the society. Schools of spells changing, the new 4e traditions. It stands to reason a spellplague would cause a collapse in such a society.

As opposed to Winterdeep, which had so few wizards and magic that its escape from any major impact by the Spellplague is easily understood.

Sorry about the threadcrap. Just a little hair of the dog this morning. No more crapping .. I promise.

A real-world analogy--we are fairly dependent on information in our society. What would happen if suddenly the Internet, Cable, and Telephone system was destroyed and a new one had to be built from scratch?
Live Free or Die Hard is what would happen. One can only hope that someone in real life can crash cars into helicopters.

As Devyn pointed out, that's a cop out of the highest order. The Mythal Cities, for instance, were protected from the Spellplague. Never mind the fact that Mythals are High Elven Magic.. and yeah, it's not like Waterdeep has any wizards (other then all those written, all those spells including the Melairshield which holds the whole thing up!)

Not to mention there's that whole "wizards going mad from the Spell Plague" thing. I imagine that might hit Halruaa harder than many locations. Seeing as how everyone in the country was a wizard and all...

Well, if we reaaaally want to parse the logic of the spellplague:

1. Wizards went crazy.
2. At least some high-powered archmages soon found new ways to use magic very quickly.
3. It's the Weave that went blammo, not magic itself. The Weave was just "the interface" with the magic, so permanent magic effects (spells that had already been cast) weren't ruined, and permanent wards like the Mythals warded off a lot of the worst wild magic of the Spellplague.

Now, why would Halruaa be hit harder than Waterdeep? I'm not a huge FR geek, but if I understand rightly, Halruaa would be likely to have a ton of low- to mid-level mages, just the right range to go crazy from the Spellplague but not masterful enough to find those archmage workarounds. Those archmages were probably overwhelmed by thousands of mooks who went nuts that their Dancing Lights doesn't work anymore. Meanwhile, Waterdeep might have a much higher (sane) archmage to (crazy) lesser mage ratio, meaning it was able to survive mostly intact.

So hey: is Chris Sims also confirming that there will be a Forgotten Realm Campaign Guide for DMs and a Forgotten Realms Player's Guide as a separate product?

We kinda got confirmation when they first talked about the Realms that it would start out as a two-book deal, and go from there.
