Constrict damage in the first round?

When a creature has improved grab + constrict and hits, does it do constrict damage as soon as it establishes the hold or does it have to wait for a successful grapple check on the next round?

According to MM glossary:

"A creature with this special attack can crush an opponent, dealing bludgeoning damage, after making a successful grapple check. The amount of damage is given in the creature's entry. If the creature also has the improved grab ability, it deals constriction damage in addition to damage dealt by the weapon used to grab."

so... yeah... pretty straight forward.

Yeah, and it's also pretty deadly!

yep. If you think it is too much, just change 50% of the constrict damage to subdual.

Or

If a monster constricts a character in spiked armor, the monster suffers the spike damage die + its own str bonus in damage.
