Converting Greyhawk monsters

nest.
half standard treasure? no treasure but guard it?

I'm having a little difficulty with CR on this one. The AC is great, the poison is potent but low DC, and the attacks will hit a lot but do almost nothing (besides expose to poison). They might peg in at CR 2 if we reduce Dex to 15 and decrease natural armor a little. What do you think?

Good idea. In fact, let's put all the ranks in Move Silently, since it already gains a hefty racial and size bonus to Hide.

Good idea.

Organization: Solitary or x (2-20)

Challenge Rating: x

Treasure: x

Alignment: Always chaotic evil?

Advancement: x

Carpet snakes are 4 to 6 feet long and weigh x pounds.

No treasure for them, they have no interest in it unless trained to guard a hoard.

Challenge Rating 1 I guess (since it takes them long enough to emerge from the carpet they'll probably loose a snake or two in the process).

For Advancement I'm thinking 4-6 HD (Small) or 4-5 HD (Small); 6-9 HD (Medium).

If they're of a similar build to a Purple Worm, a 4-6 foot snake would weigh 5-20 pounds, just on the narrow end of Small.

Cut down the range a bit and say they typically weigh 8-15 pounds?

Carpet snakes cannot speak, but understand Common?

I like Always CE for them, which makes me think they can only understand Abyssal, not Common. (Well, and parseltongue, obviously;))

Yes. Usual magical beast increase to DC? Since I think this counts as "rearing," that would be DC 23 Handle Animal. Actually, as these have Int 3, how does this work? Do we need to add a Diplomacy check of some sort to make them friendly? Normal DCs +5 for training for a general purpose or tricks as usual?

Here are some examples...

Training a Giant Owl (Int 10)
Although intelligent, a giant owl requires training before it can bear a rider in combat. To be trained, a giant owl must have a friendly attitude toward the trainer (this can be achieved through a successful Diplomacy check). Training a friendly giant owl requires six weeks of work and a DC 25 Handle Animal check. Riding a giant owl requires an exotic saddle. A giant owl can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check.

Giant owl eggs are worth 2,500 gp apiece on the open market, while chicks are worth 4,000 gp each. Professional trainers charge 1,000 gp to rear or train a giant owl.

Carrying Capacity: A light load for a giant owl is up to 300 pounds; a medium load, 301–600 pounds; and a heavy load, 601–900 pounds.

Training a Elven Hound (Int 2)
Although their intelligence is no higher than that of a typical canine, elven hounds have an independent spirit and tend to distrust nonelves. To be trained, an elven hound must have a friendly attitude toward the trainer. An elven hound usually has a friendly attitude toward trainers who are elves or who have elf blood (such as half-elves), provided the trainer supplies the hound with sustenance for at least a few days and has not attacked or mistreated the creature. An elven hound is indifferent (at best) toward most other creatures. Changing an elven hound's attitude requires a wild empathy check (with the normal -4 penalty applied against magical beasts). A character can use a Diplomacy check instead, provided the character has some way to communicate with the cooshee, such as access to a speak with animals spell.

Training a friendly elven hound requires a Handle Animal check. An elf (or a creature with elf blood) can train an elven hound without penalty, but the Handle Animal DCs for any other trainer increase by 5 (in addition to the normal +5 increase to DCs for training a magical beast). The time require depends on the tricks or task the elven hound must learn, as noted in the Handle Animal skill description.

An elven hound pup is worth 150 gp on the open market, but pups are seldom offered for sale. A hound is ready for training by age two and can live for 50 years. Adult elven hounds are generally trained for hunting or guarding. A fully trained elven hound costs at least 300 gp on the open market, if it is offered for sale at all.

Training A Hippocampus (Int 5)
A hippocampus needs training to learn to bear a rider in combat and obey orders. Use the normal Handle Animal rules, adding +5 to the DCs since it is a magical beast. Riding a hippocampus requires an exotic saddle. A hippocampus can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeed on a Ride check.

Hippocampus foals are worth 2,500 gp each on the open market. Hippocampi mature at the same rate as horses. Professional trainers charge 500 gp to rear or train a hippocampus.

Carrying Capacity: A light load for a hippocampus is up to 230 pounds; medium load, 231-460 pounds; and a heavy load, 461-690 pounds.

Let's merge these:

Training a Carpet Snake
A carpet snake may be trained to recognize a master and take simple commands. To be trained, a carpet snake must have a friendly attitude toward the trainer (this can be achieved through a successful Diplomacy check). The trainer becomes one of the snake's recognized masters. Training a friendly carpet snake requires a Handle Animal check, adding +5 to the DCs since it is a magical beast.

Carpet snake eggs are worth X gp on the open market, while young are worth X gp. Professional trainers charge X gp to train a carpet snake.

The elven hound is CR 1, so we could probably just double the amounts to 300 gp for the eggs/young and 600 gp for a fully-trained snake.
