Creating new dragons!

Go for it; and after we've done another metallic-gem-chromatic cycle, I'll cue you in on my possibly radical idea for a re-imagination of dragons: no spellcasting, instead their natural attacks have special qualities that mimic magical or psionic melee weapons (all OGC by the way), and their auras are more than just Frightful Presence.

description flavor text

Physical description

Fiercely territorial, magnesium dragons pick an isolated (otherwise defenseless) community and protect it fanatically. They are notoriously grumpy toward outsiders, but they have been known to contact adventurers for help dealing with trouble they can't handle themselves.

Combat
Combat text.

Breath Weapon (Su): A magnesium dragon has two types of breath weapon, a line which deals 1/2 fire damage and 1/2 untyped (or light?) damage and a cone of bright light which stuns (or blinds, etc?) all creatures who fail their saves.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, a magnesium dragon must hit with a claw or bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can rake.

Spell-Like Abilities: ??

Alternate Form (Su): A magnesium dragon can assume any animal or humanoid form of Medium size or smaller as a standard action three times per day. The dragon can remain in its animal or humanoid form until it chooses to assume a new one or return to its natural form.

Skills:?, ?, and ? are class skills for magnesium dragons.

Ok, so that's our basic template for the magnesium dragon, with a little bit of flavor and breath weapon thrown in. What power level do we want? I had suggested a long time ago somewhere around or between copper and bronze. What do you think?

Well, maybe it's about time to restart this thread. I've added alternate form, since that seems appropriate for this kind of dragon. Not sure about SLAs or anything yet, but if I don't hear anything, I'll probably start adding ability scores in the copper-bronze range soon. :)

Any comments or suggestions for this one?

Is the magnesium part of a family (like the ferrous) or subfamily within the metallics? That means possible access to cleric spells and clerical domain spells.

Hadn't thought about it. It's going to be one of our African/Persian themed ones, though, so I think we were going to allows it to choose spells from the druid as well as sorc/wiz spell lists. (JiCi, do you mind doing that with the teal and swapping out the wings for a burrow speed? Or is that not in your vision?) So maybe no clerical spells or domains.

Let's think about ferrous dragons after we get our metallic/gem/chromatics done. Or else go start up the rock dragon thread. ;)

Thought I'd try to revivify this thread before it's completely gone...

Updated the magnesium dragon stats. I used the copper dragon abilities and HD with the bronze dragon size. Let's think about SLAs!

Here's another dragon, but it's not mine; a guy named Witch asked me to reformat his dragon for better reading on the WotC boards (you might know this one, RavinRay). So any merit goes to this guy, not me. I think it's a good addition to this board too.

Here's the Truth dragon, a dragon immersed in the truenames:

The dragons color seems... unusual, somehow. It looks light brown, somewhat resembling the taint of worn parchment – now that you think about it, the smell resembles that of parchment as well. The entire body seems covered by ancient writings - you recognize some parts as written in Draconic, others in Celestial, and still others in languages you do not understand. His head is covered with a single, glowing word that seems most incomprehensible, and over all, unpronounceable – arfa'za-naloro'tokoa-finya. You can only guess at the words' meaning. As the body moves, his skin seems to ripple.

Truth dragons are protectors of ancient lore, some of it long forgotten. Their breath weapon has developed in such a way as to not harm the secrets of old. Well versed in the true language of the universe, the truth dragons can manipulate it directly - they possess a knack for power of truespeech. The universal word for truth glows on their heads, covering the entire face.

These masters of truespeech gladly help people, should they think they really require it. Usually, however, the creatures do not realize their assistant was a dragon. Furthermore, unlike other dragons, truth dragons do not enjoy a hoard of jewelry and gold. They find it a waste – when they do gain such prizes, they either donate it to charity, or trade it in order to increase their desired hoard – a library that in many a case surpasses the ones possessed by kings. These creatures are utterly incapable of speaking something they know to be false – their mouths will not take the desired shape. While the creatures themselves agree to this, this is actually a racial prohibition. It is not merely a lack of desire, it is a lack of possibility. They cannot do it. While they may manipulate the truth somewhat, even this only happens on rare occasions - most truth dragons feel guilty about setting someone off on the wrong path. Above all, a truth dragon despises pointless waste – he tries to preserve, not to ruin. He tries to prevent the destruction of magical items – unless they are known to be evil – or even undo that destruction, with his powers over truespeech.

Combat

In combat, a truth dragon attempts to control the battle with his many utterances, shaping the terrain as necessary, preventing other creatures from attacking him, while doing so. He suppresses or takes away enemy magical items as much as possible, though he does not wish to destroy them. However, if some creatures are adamant about destroying ancient lore, or his library, the truth dragon will not hesitate to destroy these creatures, and even their items.

Alternate Form (Su) : A truth dragon can assume any animal or humanoid form of Medium size or smaller as a standard action three times per day. The dragon can remain in its animal or humanoid form until it chooses to assume a new one or return to its natural form.

Breath Weapon (Su) : A truth dragon has two types of breath weapon, a cone of magical fire and a cone of paralyzing gas. Creatures within a cone of paralyzing gas must succeed on a fortitude save or be paralyzed for 1d6 rounds plus one round per age category. The fire magically ignores books, parchment and similar holders of ancient lore.

Frightful Presence (Ex) : A truth dragon can unsettle foes with its mere presence. The ability takes effect automatically whenever the dragon attacks, charges, or flies overhead. Creatures within a radius of 30 feet x the dragon's age category are subject to the effect if they have fewer HD than the dragon. A potentially affected creature that succeeds on a Will save (DC 10+ ½ dragon's HD + dragon's Cha modifier) remains immune to that dragon’s frightful presence for 24 hours. On a failure, creatures with 4 or less HD become panicked for 4d6 rounds and those with 5 or more HD become shaken for 4d6 rounds. Dragons ignore the frightful presence of other dragons.

Known Personal Truename: A truth dragon knows his own personal truename. He can pronounce it automatically once per day per 2 age categories.

Spell-Like Abilities: 3/day: - Scrying (juvenile and older), Sepia Snake Sigil (adult and older); 2/day – Explosive Runes (old and older); 1/day – Unname (great wyrm)

Skills: Truespeak is considered a class skill to truth dragons. Furthermore, they have a +5 racial bonus on it, as well as an additional +20 racial bonus to speak their personal truename.

Tongues (Su) : Truth dragons can speak with any creature that has a language, as though using a tongues spell (caster level equal to the truth dragon's Hit Dice). This ability is always active.

Truespeech (Sp) : A truth dragon knows and speaks utterances as a truenamer of the level indicated in its age category description.

What about solid fog as an (Sp) ability? I figure it can be used defensively, as the magnesium dragon is said to be protective.

Now for an offensive ability… wall of thorns (druid 5/plant 5) sounds like fun.

I like those ideas. What about solid fog for old and older at 3/day and wall of thorns for ancient and older at 3/day?

In addition, why not protection from energy for young adult and older at will? Also, maybe animate plants at 1/day for a great wyrm? What do you think? Should we have something more elemental? I see this one as likely having the fire or possibly earth subtype.
