Ok, this may be a weird request....

I'm getting really tired of using the same terms for naming locales and rulers in my campaign. My imagination has run dry.

I also want to be a tad original when creating my submissions to Dungeon and various d20 companies.

What other words are there for castles, temples and kings/rulers?

Here is a list I've come up with:

KINGS

  • Baron
  • Count
  • Graf
  • Mayor
  • Emperor
  • Imperator
  • Raja
  • Vizier
  • Duke
  • Prince
  • Maharaja
  • Sultan
  • Heptarch
  • Lord
  • Caesar (although I doubt I would use that)
  • Allfather
  • Overlord

(this list is written in the male gender by default....I haven't ignored the feminine versions)

Castles
  • Keep
  • Fort
  • Manse
  • Spire
  • Tower
  • Hall
  • Mansion
  • Citadel
  • Stronghold
  • Bastion
  • Hold
  • Palace
  • Manor

Temples
  • Shrine
  • Sanctuary
  • Cathedral
  • Church
  • Chapel
  • Minster
  • Grotto (that's a bit of a stretch)

I'm sure I missed a bunch. Let's hear your suggestions.

Anybody mention Fane? I think Monte Cook needs to find synonyms for Fane... :D

EDIT: Or is it Fane? Damnit, now I'm confused. I think its Fane and not Thane...

In MacBeth it's Thane, don't know about fane. Maybe it's one of those weird words that is right both ways... anyhow, in my campaign there's an emperor (quite common, yes) and a viceroy. Let me suggest viceroy, it's a pretty good one :)

Check out the Sets at Google. If you enter a few words, it will suggest others. Like if you put in King, Baron, Duke, and Mayor, it gives you some other ideas. Kind of neat. Not 100% accurate, but kind of neat.

Viceroy actually has a specific meaning. It is a person who is acting on behalf of the king. For example, I think that Canada used to have a Viceroy. Eh, maybe they still do. Any Canadians hanging about who can set me straight?

Now this doesn't mean you can't use the term in your game. But if you have a wise ass player (like me) they'll want to know who the Viceroy is representing.

Yea, a good deal of these suffer from not being symonyms.

King - Ruller of a kingdom (a feudal monarchy) - "a male monarch of a major territorial unit; especially : one whose position is hereditary and who rules for life"

Baron - Generally one of the lowest classes of nobility - "one of a class of tenants holding his rights and title by military or other honorable service directly from a feudal superior"

Count - A European nobleman synonomous with "Earl" (below a marquess and above a viscount).

Mayor - An elected or appointed administrator of a city.

Emperor - He is similar to a king, but in a non-Feudal society.

etc. etc... or did I miss the point?

Right, imc, they represent the emperor (as you may have guessed :) ) But, if you've already got a king or something, I guess is what I should have said. Also, do you suppose a viceroy could represent a deity? Hmmm... something for me to ponder.
