Damage progression of PCs

First Post
Has anybody calculated this?

From level 1 to 30, the obvious damage that PCs increase is:
- 6 from items
- 4 from stat increase
- 3-5 from epic tier at-will damage increase at level 21
- any other?

Some items add more damage to this. But I don't know how often, or at what levels.

And each extra encounter and daily power adds to the damage potential of the PC per combat/day.

Well Iron Armbands of Power add 2 per tier I think, weapon focus 1 per tier, mastery feats at epic double your crit range (for all but crit fisherman) Jagged weapons.

Hit to take out a monster

Assuming the very basics: stat increase, items and encounters I did this calculation:

How much hits do you need to bring down a monster of your level?

Code:
Lvl 1 - Hits vs Mnstr: 3	Mnstr HPs: 28	AtWill Dmg: 8	Enc.Dmg: 12
Lvl 2 - Hits vs Mnstr: 4	Mnstr HPs: 36	AtWill Dmg: 8	Enc.Dmg: 12
Lvl 3 - Hits vs Mnstr: 4	Mnstr HPs: 44	AtWill Dmg: 9	Enc.Dmg: 13
Lvl 4 - Hits vs Mnstr: 5	Mnstr HPs: 52	AtWill Dmg: 9	Enc.Dmg: 13
Lvl 5 - Hits vs Mnstr: 6	Mnstr HPs: 60	AtWill Dmg: 9	Enc.Dmg: 13
Lvl 6 - Hits vs Mnstr: 7	Mnstr HPs: 68	AtWill Dmg: 9	Enc.Dmg: 13
Lvl 7 - Hits vs Mnstr: 8	Mnstr HPs: 76	AtWill Dmg: 9	Enc.Dmg: 13
Lvl 8 - Hits vs Mnstr: 7	Mnstr HPs: 84	AtWill Dmg: 11	Enc.Dmg: 15
Lvl 9 - Hits vs Mnstr: 8	Mnstr HPs: 92	AtWill Dmg: 11	Enc.Dmg: 15
Lvl 10 - Hits vs Mnstr: 8	Mnstr HPs: 100	AtWill Dmg: 11	Enc.Dmg: 15
Lvl 11 - Hits vs Mnstr: 7	Mnstr HPs: 108	AtWill Dmg: 11	Enc.Dmg: 19
Lvl 12 - Hits vs Mnstr: 8	Mnstr HPs: 116	AtWill Dmg: 11	Enc.Dmg: 19

Lvl 16 - Hits vs Mnstr: 9	Mnstr HPs: 148	AtWill Dmg: 13	Enc.Dmg: 21
Lvl 17 - Hits vs Mnstr: 10	Mnstr HPs: 156	AtWill Dmg: 13	Enc.Dmg: 21

Lvl 30 - Hits vs Mnstr: 11	Mnstr HPs: 260	AtWill Dmg: 22	Enc.Dmg: 30

Assumptions:

Base damage ([W], dice of the power, etc.) = 4
Initial Stat bonus = 4
Encounter damage = 1[W] + 1[W] per tier + Stat Damage + Item Damage
Only encounter powers and at wills are used.
PC making damage is a non-striker.
Monster taking damage is Standard.

For levels 10/20/30 (end of each tier), the striker target at-will DPR seems to be roughly 20/40/60. The most tweaked builds get up to 30/60/100+.

For non-strikers, it really depends on where your priorities are. For a Protecting Paladin 10/15/25 DPR may be reasonable. An Ardent Paladin may go up to 15/25/35 DPR.

It's very difficult to say an average character does this much damage at a given level, because it can vary pretty wildly based on choices made, especially at paragon and epic tiers. And some characters focus their damage on at-will powers, some on encounter novas, some on multiple targets, and some just don't care about damage at all (looking at you pacifist healer).

You should call the bonus due to items "enhancement bonus" to avoid confusion with the also equivalently sized item bonuses available.

You should certainly include an item bonus of 3-6 in these numbers; what with the staff of ruin, radiant weapon, Iron Armbands, Bracers of archery etc. quite a few characters can get these bonuses - they're certainly fairly common. Somewhat weaker bonuses are often available for other implement uses too so at least a +3 is reasonable (sure, it's not guaranteed, but quite reasonable).

I would also include weapon focus; characters that don't get that probably didn't because they have something even better.

For weapon wielders, I think it's reasonable to assume that weapon die size increases by one as well due to the availability of superior weapons.

Of course, if your aim is to find the minimum expected increase, you should use a different methodology, but if you're aiming to find a reasonable baseline then you should certainly include these common things. Most characters get some other bonuses too, but since they're so diverse, it's hard to find a reasonable baseline there.

You're right eamon.

I WAS aiming for a sort of baseline, a conservative one.

Having that, it's much easier now to add Bracers and other items.

Does this include crit damage? Crit damage is a pretty big portion of a high level characters damage in many cases....though the escalation is pretty telling.

Your baseline is pretty conservative. For example, my fighter's at-will does 1d10+12 at 10th level and, fairly often, 1d10+21 at 11th level. (Marked Scourge, Son of Mercy)

My barbarian does about 1d12+2d6+15 at 11th (or 14th...)

My warlord might only do 2d10+13 or so with an encounter power, but it's giving the rest of the group +6 damage per hit or +5 attack and damage with all at-wills...

The 14th bard I just made only does 1d6+9 or 1d8+9 with at-wills, though, it's true. And that's as low as it can possibly get since I took nothing at all for damage, and hits your number for at-will.
