Kanna used the distraction the others offered to find a dark spot to crouch in and wait, watching. She wasn't one to bandy words with folk she didn't know and didn't have to deal with. Not when they outnumbered her. The big folk might waste the water of those they killed, but they'd kill nonetheless.
But Kimet seemed to be convincing them to fight Defilers. Big folk were very confusing in how they decided when to fight and when to cooperate. Kanna still didn't quite grasp how they worked. The People were straightforward enough. Loyalty ran to families, tribes, and then the People as a whole. Big folk didn't seem to have that essential loyalty to their own kind...they warred with one another constantly. But sometimes they would simply join arms with strangers who had no connection to them at all.
Even so, Kanna kept her staff at the ready when she left her hiding place and edged just into the edge of the firelight, slightly behind Chick. Her eyes flicked quickly from bandit to bandit, alert for any sign they were preparing to attack.
