Devil Eye Theatre Presents...

The Edge

First Post
Here’s an idea for a ‘semi-adventure/item’ I had that I thought I’d post, to share and to develop it and get any extra ideas from you guys.

What do devils do to entertain themselves? As well as quarrelling amongst their own kind and warring with demons, everyone knows a devils favourite past time is pestering and toying with the mortals, yes? But not every devil can just pop over any time they want, and mortals have a reputation for trying to drive them out. Yes, it’s all part of the fun brawling with adventurers and such, but it’s not something you can do everyday. So walk, fly or ooze over to the Devil’s Eye Viewing Arena, created by the enterprising lesser pit fiend lord ‘-Name?-’ to provide entertainment for all the denizens of the hells.

You could probably best describe it as ‘infernal reality TV’. It revolves around using a small magic item The Devil’s Eye, a small red gem that seems to swirl with fire inside, roughly the size of a golf ball. These gems allow a viewer at a specially built pit (the aforementioned arena) to see the surroundings of the eye in 3D as if it was in the pit, an operator at the pit can change the ‘zoom’ so to show larger areas. Also using an Arena and Eye beings can be ‘summoned’ to the location of the Eye for a short time. The devil climbs into the arena and can be sent to the material plane just as a summon spell.

‘-Name?-‘ arranged for several Devils Eyes to be manufactured and distributed by imp to various mortals that he thought would provide interesting entertainment for his customers. These included skilled warriors, a lonely hermit, child, rulers etc; and the plan is the players are among such ‘contestants’ :] . Challenges are devised for them and sent in, appearing out of nowhere. Ranging from fighting and combats to just spooking and irritating the poor fellows; all depending on who it is. The entertainment while still new is a big hit and many devils now love to see their favourite mortals fighting for their lives or jumping out of their suddenly burning bed. :)

For a DM this gives a great option of being able to spring any manner of challenges upon their unsuspecting players whenever they want. Even low level characters can be given this treatment as fiendish animals and the lesser devils can be used at first. Also seeing that a creature sent at them is judged and rewarded for how much entertainment they give not for simply killing their entertainers outright, it’s not as lethal as it may first sound. Sure, the characters will get beat up and humiliated, but provided they do a reasonable job fighting, then a fraction of xp can still be given.

The adventure part of this could be several things, from low level characters trying to get rid of their Devil Eye but it always coming back, to high level characters going off to hell to try to stop this terrorising game at the source. Its also good as a story based reason to first go to the hot place, rather than the silly situation where tough characters who simply go there because they can (who would really want to do that for the hell of it?).

So, like it? If you were an evil git who owned this hellish circus what would you send at your performers? What do ye thinks ay? :)

Thanks...
