I let them do a heal check, with variable difficulty depending on if the friend or foe is actively hiding his wounds or does not bleed. If they succeed, I tell them a rough fraction of the enemy(or ally)'s life, usually 1/4 or 3/4...

The rules require us to tell when the monster is blooded and dead / unconscious. I added 2 another "states" to describe the monster (or character) condition, that are roughly at 1/4 hp and 3/4 hp. So the whole scale goes like this:

Sweated (under 3/4 hp but above bloodied)
Blooded (1/2 hp)
F**ked (below 1/4 hp)
Dead (0 hp)

Sorry for the f-bomb, I used it for the 1st time because I forgot the original name I intended to use and my players immediately liked this one. "Yea, he's totally f***ed now, finish him" quickly became very popular and if I try to use the other name, they just ignore it.
