Oooo...eery similarities. My players' party is:
Half-elf druid
Troldfolk priest
Gnome rogue
Dwarf fighter
Human fighter (almost went with monk)

No one seems to want to play an arcanist.

Balance depends on the game being run also. Most of my players don't care for mages so I avoid mage based stories.


Group one:
halfling rogue/fighter
centaur barbarian / warhulk
1/2 dwarf / 1/2 troll (grendel) fighter
elven arcane archer
dwarven battle cleric
warforged monk

Group two:
warforged fighter
human fighter
dwarven cleric
dwarven artificier

Not much for mages .... not to say there isn't imbalance within the groups.

The group I DM for wouldn't recognize balance if it ran up to them, grabbed them by the shirts, and yelled in their faces, "I AM BALANCE!!!"

The group that I GM at the moment.

Human Cleric 4
Human Sorcerer 4 or Human Barbarian 2/Rogue 2 (I won't go into details here but it's a little complicated)
Human Cleric 3/Ranger 1
Half-Elf Fighter 3/Sorcerer 1
Half-Elf Sorcerer 4

Is the group balanced? Sort of. They have most areas covered.

The guy that plays the Sorcerer or Barbarian/Rogue hasn't really specialised in a lot of the traditional "thief" skills like open lock, disable device, etc., so the party can be a bit light on there. Utility spells that a Wizard would normally have are also a little lacking.

The 2 clerics both have full plate which helps with the melee side of things since the Fighter/Sorcerer has specialised in ranged combat.

So far though the party has been able to handle most things that have been sent their way. There haven't been too many traps or locked doors that the party have encountered so that has helped.

My new group just rolled up characters :)D:D - I haven't had a D&D group for a half year) and we made them together (the Favoured Soul's character actually just left my house, since he missed the actual day yesterday for character creation with the group) and we are actually pretty balanced and have a neat party going on. We're starting in Hlondeth in the Vilhon Reach in Faerun, FYI.

Smoking Mountains Gold Dwarf Knight
Chessentan Air Genasi Ranger (Bow Path)
Chondalwoodan Wild Elven Druid (PHBII Animal Shape alt. ability)
Vilhon Reach Lightfoot Halfling Beguiler
Dragon Coast Human Favoured Soul of Kelemvor

The Knight is our tank, the ranger is out scout/secondary fighter, the druid is focusing on spells that will affect many enemies/many allies and on her animalshape ability, the beguiler is going for sneaky bastard/"face role, and the favoured soul is a healer/self-buffing tank.

So, we have a good stong "face", a few tanks/semi-tanks, and divine spellcasting. We are a bit light on arcane spellcasters (Beguilers are very niche) and don't have a true 'sapper' character. Other than that, we're good.

My buddy who's away till december is going to come in as a Warlock or Wizard, so that'll help fill in some gaps, methinks :)

In any case, I am just happy to be playing again :D
