I am wondering how good DDI will be- it seems like it could be the worst of both worlds.

That is, it uses a computer, but only as a glorifed phone.

I cant decide if it would be better if you could right click on your target, select an attack, and have the computer roll, compare stats, assign damage. That would make combat really fast, but then you would just have some people playing an MMO with bad graphics with a GM in the room.

I want to try it out- but dont have a former group with which to reconnect. Do you see yourself making a new group of regular friends with it?

I had a lot of fun playing D&D online when 3e first came out using something called WebRPG. I don't know whether that's still going, but even if it's only as good as that it will be great - but it promises to be way, way better.

I will definitely be playing D&D online. How else can I play with my brother who lives thousands of miles away?

I think it is a great innovation. However I don't think I will have time to play on it with work, school and kids. I barely have enough time to play video games of which I do every once in a while. My weekly "tabletop" game will still meet face to face and unless there are tools there that can help that game out I doubt we will be buying DDI.

That is for me, but a friend from work who has not played D&D in years has expressed interest in utilizing DDI. He enjoys the concept, of when he or his other traveling friend is out on a business trip they can log in and play a game half a country away. He is a WOW player and the group that he plays WOW with has been meeting and playing stuff since high school. So I think this is right up his ally.

It's a nice concept, but if I am going to pay $15 a month for a game it would be for an actual game and not a virtual tabletop and online magazine. DDI would have to be something amazing to convince me to pay a subscription monthly.

I am extremely likely to move to a very small town in the near future. The DDI may be my best way to play the game, if I want to play it at all.

I'd rather develop my own application then pay $15 per month.

If you're going to play 4.0 online for $15 they already have that, it's called WoW ;)

I have a table-top group, so I doubt it. I could see using it to run a game for people I know only through message boards, though.
