Does anyone have any experience with running campaigns starting at level 0, or where the adventurers start as commoners?

I get the idea, but never enjoyed it as a player. I want to play a character that has cool powers and spells, not a farmer. Even with 5e if you make 0-level your background and give me a few things I would still feel that background should be in the background. If you wanted to play 0-level as a 5 minute discussion before starting at 1st level it would be ok. Telling the others a bit of history and motivation and how/why you got to 1st level helps the DM and other players get your character.
