D&D 4E Dragon Magazine #418

Just saw an interesting article in Dragon Magazine #418 (published December 2012), discussing inns. There are several charts for generating names, the names of owners (based on racial heritage), the types of food offered based on location (in the desert you can get "meerkat dumplings with sage"), and atmosphere.

the "Strange" atmosphere says, "The music played by the bard is . . . eerie. People laugh at nothing in particular. A child in the corner sits alone, rocking back and forth on the floor."

I love it.

There's a chart for random events, from "a guy is standing outside with a nervous expression, apparently waiting for someone" to "a ghostly face appears on the side of a tankard".

It reminds me of the scene in Bellairs’s The Face in the Frost when Prospero gets to a town, checks in at an inn, and finds everything boringly weird and weirdly boring. Then, he gets a shock.

“Why won’t he go to sleep?” she mumbles…
