In today’s Unearthed Arcana, we explore character options from the Dragonlance setting. This playtest document presents the kender race, the Lunar Magic sorcerer subclass, the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery backgrounds, and a collection of new feats, all for use in Dungeons & Dragons.

Kender have a (surprisingly magical) ability to pull things out of a bag, and a supernatural taunt feature. This magical ability appears to replace the older 'kleptomania' description -- "Unknown to most mortals, a magical phenomenon surrounds a kender. Spurred by their curiosity and love for trinkets, curios, and keepsakes, a kender’s pouches or pockets will be magically filled with these objects. No one knows where these objects come from, not even the kender. This has led many kender to be mislabeled as thieves when they fish these items out of their pockets."

Lunar Magic is a sorcerer subclass which draws power from the moon(s); there are notes for using it in Eberron.

Also included are feats such as Adepts of the Black, White, and Red Robes, and Knights of the Sword, Rose, and Crown.

Literally changes their very identity. Why even make it connected to the Feywild instead of a mild god curse like in the old lore?
I think they wanted to avoid the idea of race being tied to behaviors, so they went with supernatural abilities. A specific kender culture might, however, still be open to "borrowing" other people's things. As a long-time Dragonlance fan, I'm cool with it. I'm sure there will be plenty who are not.

This release makes me very excited!

The whole point of the Dragonlance setting is its gods. But for me to even consider this setting, the Cleric class needs to function normally nontheistically.

We tried out the version of it where I made a Cleric character, not knowing about the spellcasting sabotage. We played one session realizing its inherent problems and railroadiness, and that was it. We moved on to a different setting, and I have hated Dragonlance ever since.

Does the phase of the moon not actually matter, the sorcerer chooses their "phase"? I mean, in my world, I'd actually, you know, tie it to the moon(s).....otherwise, this all looks pretty good to me. I have no issue with the Kender changes, but then, I generally can't imagine caring about lore if they want to change it.

That weirded me out too. I am wondering if the book will include moon rules in general (this was the case in the 3.5 book) and then the moon sorcerer is special in that they basically can just choose whatever phase they want

We know why.
They had to do something like this. They’re moving away from cultural traits tied to race, and a lack of boundaries around personal property just doesn’t make sense as a biological trait. This is the most logical way to keep the pockets thing but make it an inborn ability. Personally, I would rather they have totally dropped the pockets ability, but I can see why they would be reticent about doing that.
