In today’s Unearthed Arcana, we explore character options from the Dragonlance setting. This playtest document presents the kender race, the Lunar Magic sorcerer subclass, the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery backgrounds, and a collection of new feats, all for use in Dungeons & Dragons.

Kender have a (surprisingly magical) ability to pull things out of a bag, and a supernatural taunt feature. This magical ability appears to replace the older 'kleptomania' description -- "Unknown to most mortals, a magical phenomenon surrounds a kender. Spurred by their curiosity and love for trinkets, curios, and keepsakes, a kender’s pouches or pockets will be magically filled with these objects. No one knows where these objects come from, not even the kender. This has led many kender to be mislabeled as thieves when they fish these items out of their pockets."

Lunar Magic is a sorcerer subclass which draws power from the moon(s); there are notes for using it in Eberron.

Also included are feats such as Adepts of the Black, White, and Red Robes, and Knights of the Sword, Rose, and Crown.

Kender: even if they're not my favourite part of the setting, I liked them.

Lunar sorcerer: it is weird flavor-wise that each of the phases would correspond with each of the 3 Krynn moons. As if they were folded into phases.

Feats: would be nice to have some above 4th level. Good choice as subclasses would have restricted the organizations to just one class. I specially liked sp the flavor of spending HD to do more damage.

I hope the expended them beyond 4th. I think they will wait to see how the survey goes before they make that decision.

They already were?

I would assum They will no longer be so OCD about their desire to complete their life path. Effectively altering their religion/society.

Would Mount Nevermind even exist anymore? Or most of Krynns technological advancement (such as it was)?
Gnomes are extinct. There is just a smoking crater.

Out of curiosity, I dug up the final version of the kender from the D&D Next playtests. It basically has all the same concepts in terms of abilities, just different executions:
  • Dex +1 and Cha +1 (as opposed to floating ASI)
  • Speed 25 feet
  • Fearless (immunity to the frightened condition)
  • Kender Pockets (25% chance of having any piece of nonmagical equipment after searching for 1 minute, once per day, mundane explanation)
  • Taunt (opposed Performance vs. Insight as action, if you win target must attack only you, with disadvantage; only works on target once per day)
So I guess they were pretty happy with the general approach they had way back in 2013, it was just a matter of power and flavor. (I wonder if the mechanical changes might have even been based on ancient Next feedback.)

Dragonlance chronicles pretty much got me into D&D around the time 2E came out. One of the earliest campaigns I played in was set in Krynn where I played a Kender named Findalot.

So purely on a nostalgia basis I’m looking to a future release. But I like the direction they’re going.

Yeah if they did they'd say twice as much (kidding

Eberron literally has a fey plane that at times twists parts of Eberron.
You are like the second person to read “not a strong influence” as “doesn’t have one someone prove me wrong quick”

Emphasis strong. Emphasis it doesn’t overwhelm the setting, the plane of air has a much stronger influence considering the most famous city in the setting.

WotC, just make a new setting dangnabbit.

You lucked onto a bunch of new fans and you are twisting old setting to sell it to them instead of selling new stuff.
Because DragonLance is a popular enough setting that they can make oodles of money on DMsGuild cuts when the old guard fans now have a platform to sell their "Classic-DragonLance-Lore Kender Race" and "Moon Magic for All Casters" pdfs.

Meanwhile, they ARE making new campaign settings. They've confirmed as much. And that's beyond the continuous stream of Magic: The Gathering adaptations.
