Ranged weapon plus high Dexterity should have you attacking first...unless you're getting attacked by the Roadrunner or Speedy Gonzalez.

Yeah, but in this case i opted for a mostly melee character. But even if highly versatile and being good at both (like raising Dex and picking up Alert), i don't think shooting first would be enough. Killing first is what prevents you from being hit or dead, not shooting first. And after all the shooting is done, the enemy is still standing, then the next best thing is to get the hell out of Dodge :D

Your not going to be able to kill most things in 1 turn due to HP inflation.

Plus, if you run away, your ally get's hit instead, and dead allies can't deal damage. ;)

Of course, dex adds to both offense and defense
And range adds a good bit of defense, without only a little loss of offense.

...Hopefully, being a ranged specialist in a party means that you have a meat shield, or two if you're lucky, between you and the BBEG. Two attacks helps you knock down those HPs so the melee type gets to drop it on their turn. Like an assist in basketball.

If you have someone else getting defense, then yes, you should get offense.
