Fogmoor

The Fogmoor, lying to the south and west of Hengistbury Village, on the far side of the river, is an extensive region, stretching nearly 30 miles along the river, and some 20 miles inland. Characterized by open, flat terrain elevated some 100' and more above the level of the river, the Fogmoor has very little growing on it beyond heather and coarse grass, peat and low, spiny trees. Wide patches of peat bog, small dark pools of unknown depth, boggy creeks, and sudden small clefts in the ground leading to deep, narrow crevices that can run hundreds of yards, make the moors an unfriendly place. Sudden heavy fog that rolls down from the higher hills to the north can turn it from unfriendly to deadly at a moment's notice.

It is well-known that along the river, to the north and south of Hengistbury, on the Fogmoor side, lair several tribes of lizardmen. They are unfriendly to each other most of the time, and remain neutral to Hengistbury, so long as the villagers respect their fishing rights. Only occasionally are they suspected of helping along the disappearance of a fisherman or, at the least, his day's catch.

Worse, it has long been rumored that a werewolf dwells in the higher reaches of the moors; once he was known as Handsome Harry, a bandit, but legend says that he met and fell in love with a beautiful maiden on the moor, who turned out to be a shapeshifter. He gladly became a wolf to dwell with her, but only a few years later she was slain by adventurers. Harry is reputed to hate all adventurers with a passion, and deliberately seeks them out in revenge.

Further rumors talk of an ancient monastery that once was built in the heart of the moors, filled with the knowledge of the ages; none has ever seen it, but adventurers regularly come to Hengistbury with maps in hand, and attempt to locate it. Unfortunately, they either return empty-handed, or are never seen again...
