I've been using the checks written in the MM - having forgotten about the rules in the PHB about using Knowledge checks. Obviously my players aren't as switched on to this sort of stuff!

I've been doing the same thing. I like it better and no one is complaining.

I'll probably keep doing so but adding some "you think/heard its vulnerable to fire, etc.) at certain check levels.
