You should probably eliminate any damage dealing spells, or any with area of effects.

"I'll drink my Potion of Fireball! What happens?"

(Dm facepalm...)

Go to a party.
Find your rival.
Empty his glass.
Open potion of Fireball.
Pour potion into glass.
Walk away at a considerable distance and wait.

Two things:
1) Emptying his glass isn't really needed - potions are one ounce, which is not all that much. You might need to empty a shot glass a bit, but a cup of wine? Hardly going to notice.
2) They affect the imbiber. You don't really need to walk away from the guy who just swallowed a potion of Fireball any more than you gain benefit from standing next to the guy who just downed a potion of Bless (as a side-effect, this makes potions of Scorching Ray more useful for that... although what you'll really want to get is Extended Acid Arrow at a high caster level - no damage cap)

1) oh! sweet, mix it into his drink then!

2) Walk away, not to avoid the splash effect, but to avoid accusation of being the person next to your rival when he unexpectedly blew up.
