Gaze attack qn

Suppose I'm fighting a creature with a gaze attack, and I avert or close my eyes to keep from meeting its gaze. This lets me reduce or eliminate the chance of having to make a save on my action. Does this also apply when the creature uses its gaze attack on its action?
