getting killed by vampire spawn

If a character dies due to either the energy drain or blood (constitution) drain attacks of a vampire spawn, does he/she rise as one?

The regular vampire template is specific about this by the spawn entry is vague.

thanks.

If a monster's entry doesn't state what happens to a drained victim, it becomes a wight. See the energy drain description in the DMG.

Here's a related question. The vampire and vampire spawn entries talk about the monsters' coffins, and how they try to get back to their coffins after being "killed". Suppose we have a bunch of hapless adventurers who fight a vampire, and they all get drained to death. No-one is around to bury them. Do they have coffins? What happens if they get reduced to zero hit points?

The coffins come to them?

Well, obviously they won't have coffins. Since there's no text to quote here, this is how I'd rule it: Basically, the coffin is a vampire's bed or nest. The adventurer who wasn't buried will still have (or find) a place where they rest during the day. This place is where they will return to, should they be reduced to gaseous form. It may be nothing more than a crevasse in the stone wall of the crypt where they were killed, but it's "home," y'know? :p

I would think that any self-respecting vampire would have the decency to provide a coffin to his spawn.

just kidding. Thanks for the answer to my question.

No only a vampire can create spawns. It says in the vampire template CREATE SPAWN. Also it would say under SA(special ability) or SQ(special qualities) create spawn. How to become a vampire and not a spawn is not said may be under vampire template but didnt see it.

In response to Belares:

Create Spawn (Su): A humanoid or monstrous humanoid slain by a vampire’s energy drain attack rises as a vampire spawn 1d4 days after burial. If the vampire instead drains the victim’s Constitution to 0 or less, the victim returns as a spawn if it had 4 or fewer HD and as a vampire if it had 5 or more HD.

I ruled that a vampire or spawn without a "coffin" cannot reform and will be destroyed. From the Vampire Spawn entry in the SRD, "[A vampire spawn] must reach its coffin home within 2 hours or be utterly destroyed." It is therefore imperative that a vampire or spawn make itself a coffin immediately, if it doesn't already have one. Conscientious vampires ;) have their minions prepare a coffin for any new "recruits".

Creating a vampire??
need the create greater undead spell.
Vampires create vampire spawn -
Vampire spawn generate wights.

Also the spawning - by definition - cannot occur until 1d4 days AFTER burial... so the tricky question is what happens if you don't get buried in a coffin, crypt or similar device.

well, you would become vampire spawn - but be at a tremendous weakness. If you got reduced to 0hp - you have no coffin home to go to... 2 hrs to utter destruction.

As spawn are so EASY to create... just have to run off and go kill a villager or two... or three... or a hundred...

What vampire wants to have to bother with giving the spawn a coffin in the first place? - makes them easier to destroy if they get out of line and decide not to take orders.
