Golem Creation - T&B vs MM

Marauder

First Post
Hi all,

So what is the score with regards to Golem creation? In the MM it seems pretty cut and dry. Spend X gold, Y xp, and Z weeks and there you go.

In Tome and Blood is is similar with the exception that some gold is spent on Vestments which can be reused (30,000gp on vestments for a Stone Golem - what are they made of to cost so much?)

However, the Manual of Golem item has confused me. The implication in the golem creation part is that if you don't spend the creation time uninterrupted, you waste everything except the Manual (end of that paragraph). To me this implies that the Manual is mandatory for use in the animation process - the creation of which is *very* expensive in terms of xp.

So how does it work - do you need the Manual and have to follow the creation rules (two xp hits if you haven't got a Manual as you need to create it first), or can you create the golem and just use the Manual in lieu of spending the xp (because it acts as a spell trigger)?

If it's the latter, it doesn't make much sense because creating the Manual costs at least 3 times the xp it would cost just to create the golem - in this case why would any wizard bother to make that sacrifice?

Any and all help most appreciated - thanks!

Yes, Encyclopaedia Arcanae: Constructs -- It Is Alive has lots of rules for Golem construction, and is (IMHO) the 'crunchiest' of the EA books.

Spells & Spellcraft also has nifty stuff on Golem construction...
