I finally got vbulletin to store it's .css definitions in a seperate file folks. What that means is

1 fewer query per page and

4.5 less K of information that has to be passed from server to browser per page - and yes that adds up fast.

Within the last couple of minutes of getting this to work the server has sped up noticably. Very noticably, though only time will tell if it holds up (here's hoping).

4.5K per page? Dang Michael, that is great! Hitting the big-boards counter page, it looks like afternoon hours in North America account for over 1000 hits/hour. If even a good portion of those hits use the cached .css, that adds up pretty quickly over the course of an hour.
