Innocent is the keyword in both cases here - unfortunately, they don't get specific on what is meant by this. Can an evil creature which is minding it's own business be considered an innocent, or is it culpable by virtue of it's alignment? The rules don't say."Good characters and creatures protect innocent life."
"People who are neutral with respect to good and evil have compunctions against killing the innocent but lack the commitment to make sacrifices to protect or help others."
No mention of the innocent here - perhaps it could be better reworded as ""Evil" implies hurting, oppressing and killing innocents" in order to match the other alignment descriptions, and "the spirit of the game", where murder is sometimes necessary to protect innocents when characters are living in a world of monsters...because I don't think it matches it when taken literally.“Evil” implies hurting, oppressing, and killing others. Some evil creatures simply have no compassion for others and kill without qualms if doing so is convenient.
